Had some trenching/boring done for new service feed to a lot I built on. Contract amount states rock adder may be required if additional rock encountered. Got email mid project that they needed to bring a rock saw in to the tune of $18.86/ft and 300ft max. I approved said please proceed. They finally finished(originally quoted 6 days but took over a month) and received bill with $20k in change orders rather than expected $6k. When I inquired he said the $14k extra was the rock adder on top of rock saw. Being as they inquired for the special rock saw and change order I’d think they would have done the same for any other major changes. Think they ate it on project and had a lot of staff turnover on it as well Can I fight it reasonably? 3x approved amount is insane |

| Depends on your contract or work order you signed and the language of it. It does sound riciculous ive priced out a shitload of utility crossings in WA and I guarantee its more expensive here. It depends on your state. Change order directives that increase the contract 300% should absolutely have been authorized by the owner they are just seeing if you will bite. Ive had pissing matches with architects, engineers, and owners over less its a game that sucks to play. |

I’m a contractor myself and we have to get change orders signed off over most everything. Their contract reads “rock adder may require change order” Will probably send it off to legal. Not trying to say they need to consult me for every little change but 3 x the approved amount is crazy. Also no “rock adder” rate provider |

Any departure from that should have been negotiated. 100% agree. That how I interpreted it too. I paid the contracted amount along with approved change order but have withheld anything else. Received a follow up email that showed the supposed breakdown of the rock adder(added it to all boring they did). Of course there is no way to confirm that as its all written on a piece of paper. |
