My 4.5 year old found this on Netflix and likes it. It's weird, creepy, dark, and there's an elderly woman with watermelon sized boobs wearing seashell pasties singing on a stage.

Rated PG.

Edit...Yes, I'm a party pooper and turned it off. Trolls movie it is!

It's trippy but pretty creative. I like that it's a dark children's movie that wasn't made by Tim Burton so it doesn't have all of the familiar shit that he puts in his films that you just get sick of

I thought it was a really good movie and quite creepy. I hope to scare the cheap out of my daughter with it soon.

I think Neil Gaiman (sp) wrote it.

That's what happens when Neil Gaimen writes a children's book.

i heard an interview with him... he was really disappointed that there was no horror flicks for his 6yo daughter, so he sat down and wrote one.

i wonder how many parents have cursed his name regarding caused nightmares... shit gets pretty freaky in the third act.

His aunt and grandma looked a lot like the 2 old women.

I have the book and movie and I'm not sure when I'm going to get around to sharing it with my 5 year old.

My daughter found it on Netflix when she was 6 and watched it dozens of times.  I can think of worse things for a kid to watch, namely most anything on prime time TV.

I think it's just crazy enough to appeal to a kid's imagination. Even though it's insane my kids think it's the best.

I'm friends with the guy that built all of the camera motion rigs and 3D stereoscopic attachments for Laika, the company that made the movie.  I may have done some of the machining for him

Good point.

I also liked how the knitted items really WERE knitted.  I saw some "behind the scenes" footage where they interviewed the woman who made them.  Her knitting needles really were needles.

But if you REALLY want to see it looking trippy and weird, get the DVD with the 3D glasses.  It'll give you a little bit of a headache (it did for me) but it is pretty interesting seeing the other-side garden blooming.

And two side notes...
1) The father is played by "PC guy" (John Hodgman) from the old Mac-vs-PC commercials.  At least for his spoken lines.   However when he's singing he's voiced by John Linnell from They Might Be Giants.

2) The book is weirder than the movie and well worth reading.  Or listening to the audiobook (read by Gaimen himself)

Also if you really want TRIPPY, try reading the book - or listening to the audiobook (read by neil gaiman so that's a bonus).

That is really cool.

Watching the amount of work that goes into making the films that Laika does is always impressive to me. Lots of pure craftsmanship and talent that you don't see in the film industry anymore, especially in kids movies which for the most part have gone all CGI.

We we're staying in a cabin in northern Michigan when it came out on DVD. We had a day of nonstop rain, so we rented it at a local store. My kids watched it over and over again. As soon as the credits rolled, they would restart it.

The other thing that happens is that he wins a shit-ton of awards for them.  You should check out The Graveyard Book.

Gaiman is one of my all time favorite authors.  When I lived in NYC, I waited in line for 7 hours at one of his book signings.  It had gone way over schedule but he stayed until everyone in line was able to meet him and get their books signed.  It was some like 10+ hours

My niece is always talking about "other" family members. She also found a small crack in some drywall and ended up tearing a big hole in it looking for a door.
