Quoted: When confronting a mountain lion, never show fear. Stand your ground. Back tracking or running away induces a prey response from the lion. By showing fear and backtracking or running away, your telling the lion that you are food. View Quote Ya this girl wanted you away from its kittens. Stand your ground might get you tore up. Backing slowly away seemed prudent facing it . Throwing rocks if no pistol to scare it. Never know what mama will do. Eta @countyworker @Countyworker One of your friends? |

Yeah a little more situational awareness on his end and he could have been much better prepared for such an encounter.
I've had a few out wandering around this time of year. |

That was a very intense encounter, he's lucky he didn't stumble and fall. I wouldn't have been able to keep my camera trained on the cat like that, I would have been flinging rocks with both hands way sooner than he did.

I think kitteh was protecting its kittens more so than looking for a snack.
I would have backpeddled too but instead of my phone my .357 would be in my hand. It would have been damn hard to not pull the trigger the first time kitteh charged. I wouldn’t take any pleasure in killing mama kitteh for doing her thing, but I’m not getting shredded into ribbons either. At some point Afterwards I would need to change my shorts out. |

Quoted: At one point he says “fuck where’s my gun” my guess is not with him. That cat was pissed. I don’t think standing you ground and walking towards it was going to work. View Quote I used to not carry when cycling or running way out in the boonies because I wear minimal clothing. For the last couple years, even if just in running shorts, I easily carry an LCP with a frame clip in a pocket holster in my waistband. Of course we don’t have mountain lions here, but there are dogs both four-legged and two-legged. He was jogging, he should get a nice little LCP or Keltec at least. |

Quoted: Serious question: I've encountered a lot of Black Bear out in the woods. If you stand your ground, they usually stop what they're doing too and watch you back. If you throw your arms up and yell, or run a few steps towards them, they run away. Does it work on wild cats like the mountain lion? Can you just scare it away by "getting big" and running at it? View Quote The fact that the cat ran away only after the stupid soy boy threw rocks at it should tell you much. Predators dont want to get hurt if they dont have too. |

I came upon three of them in the dark on an old logging road. I was 3+ miles away from my car.
I yelled, made myself look big. They didn't even twitch. They were probably less than 30 feet away. I drew my 1911 and backed away. Scary walk back to my car. Mountain Lions scare me. And they didn't even do anything. Pretty sure they would have just scattered if I squeezed off a round. My dog is defective and didn't even notice them. |

It was just protecting its babies it would have been a shame to have to shoot her but being a kitty snack also sucks, luckily it worked out for both this time.

Quoted: Uhh...she was protecting her kittens, not trying to eat him. The cat’s body language tells all. He saw cute little kitties on the trail, and approached. Momma didn’t like that. What I found funny is when momma was out of camera view in the beginning, one of the kittens further up the path saw mom running toward said kitten and the man. Kitten is like “oh shit, mommy is mad! I better run”! And runs right toward the guy making the situation worse. View Quote This, dude was getting closer to the kittens to film them for the grams, that's why he was already filming and caught the action. I'd say if he was looking for some good content with those kittens, he found even better content with the momma. |

Best thing to do in that instance is to run over right away and take one of her cubs as a hostage .

Legit question: if you flip the script and run at it, will it say "game on!" or bug out?
