Co-worker has a family member who has given him a dirt bike.  Bike is in Portland, OR.  We're in central MO.  Shipping quotes have been $1300-$1500, which is a significant fraction of the value of the bike.  Curious if anyone has ideas on creative ways to get a bike shipped from Portland to central MO for a more affordable rate.

He's found round-trip airfare for <$300 in September, I think he's considering flying up, disassembling into UPS-friendly boxes  and shipping it back in parts.  The family up there won't be able to disassemble for  him.

Thought I'd check for any brilliant suggestions.

Drive east until you hit the Missouri river.  May want to go below Lake Oahi.  Put it on a floaty device with a solar powered GPS tracker, notify recipient when it arrives?

Put it on an LTL pallet, ship it pallet freight. Probably $300-600 if you do freight terminal dropoff and pickup with the right carrier.

Rent a minivan and just throw it in.

This is going to be a major PITA and I suspect UPS shipping on 200+ lbs of large odd-shaped boxes (wheels, forks, engine, frame, gas tank, etc) is going to negate a lot of the potential savings here, unless he has a corporate account or similar.

Taking it apart and shipping it in separate boxes is going be a huge PITA, it won't be cheap but will probably be cheaper.

Driving 4000 miles round trip in a 20MPG pickup to get it will cost $7-800 in fuel, probably similar to shipping the pieces.

One way plane ticket and then rent a minivan or truck and drive it back.  Sounds like a good road trip to me.

 OP......nothing creative will work here.

Have your friend remove handlebars and wheels.

Get a pallet that will fit the frame, wheels, and handlebars.
Maybe find a used one at a dealership.

Have  your friend turn the pallet into a crate with suitable strength to survive being on a truck.

Have your friend take it to truck freight shipping place and drop it off.

Just did a little digging around and it looks like most pick up trucks and cargo vans are local rental only.

I did find one but going to pretty expensive especially after buying fuel for 2000 miles

Go to home depot rent pick up truck in Portland.  Load up drive out of town fast as possible.  By the time they realize the truck is missing you will be almost back to MO.  Unload truck take to nearest Home depot and drop keys on counter.  Pretend you didn't know you shouldn't do that.  Walk out and and go for a ride on your bike.  Easy peasy.

New bikes come in crates. Get one from a local motorcycle shop. Crate it up and ship it with a freight carrier.

Yup. Fastenal Blue Line worked for me when I needed to ship a set of four tires from SC to OH.  Fastenal wouldn’t work in this case but there are other “less than truckload” carriers.

I'm probably of little help, but I had a crate about the size of a dirtbike, but a bit heavier, shipped from FL to NY a few months ago when fuel was even lower and it was just over $1000 LTL.

I have a feeling no matter how you send it it's going to cost a good chunk.

Make a really big 'if it fits it ships' box and send it for $5.

USPS probably won't notice.

About 2000 miles to drive.

4 day rental of a van (30 hour trip one way) is about $750. 25 mpg is about 80 gallons of fuel x $4/gallon is at least $320 in fuel.

Add in the time and it costs less just to have it shipped.

This is my vote.

Fly, buy, build, rent something, drive it back.

HF will have everything you need, to include a welder for the cheapest car you rent that doesn't have a receiver or wiring for a trailer. I have one of those trailers and can easily move it around myself. They're pretty light, that and a 300 or 400lb dirt bike would basically be like driving a compact car with a couple of your midwestern friends in the trunk.

This must be one of those threads where people show they are oblivious to current pricing on goods and services.

There's not "cheap" way to get something dirt bike sized moved 2000 miles right now unless you happen to catch someone already making most of the trip that happens to have room and is willing to toss the bike in their truck or trailer.......and someone like that isn't going to be carrying freight insurance.

It's a 30 hour drive, one way. Even at 15 hours of driving per day it's a 4 day trip out and back.
