Many women joined the fight, serving as nurses, commanders, spies, couriers, and organizers. Historians estimate that one in ten Filipino guerrillas was female—though many more went unrecognized. Despite their vital contributions, women’s role in the resistance remains largely overlooked. To help preserve this history, Desiree Benipayo co-founded the Philippine World War II Memorial Foundation in 2017. She also serves as VP of Research and Education for the Foundation, Secretary of Memorare Manila 1945, and Philippine Tour Manager for the National World War II Museum’s Victory in the Pacific Tours. Much more was needed to break the political stalemate in Tokyo and allow the Emperor to call it quits. The Japanese public, outside the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was hardly aware of how the "new weapon" was any different from the fire bombs they were suffering from. In the affected cities, the sheer grotesqueness of the dying shocked many people into abandoning victims with symptoms they could not understand. The medical profession was awed into measuring, recording, and trial-and-erroring unprecedented challenges. These are classic trauma responses, trauma referring not to the event but to the human system's inability to grasp and integrate an overwhelming experience. In broad strokes, this talk traces how shock and awe manifested in Japan, on Ground Zero and for the nation. It is a story mainly of the 1950s, thanks to strict censorship of discussion of the bombs under American military occupation. As such, shock and awe in Japan was almost entirely about the dawn of the nuclear age, from its shocking inhumanity to the awesome promise of nuclear energy. Speaker Bio: Franziska Seraphim teaches modern Japanese and global history at Boston College, where she also directs the Asian Studies Program. Among other courses, she teaches the Asia Pacific War as transnational history, Hiroshima in history and memory, as well as memory of World War II globally and comparatively. She is the author of War Memory and Social Politics in Japan, 1945-2005 (Harvard Asia Center, 2006), and is finishing a monograph entitled "Geographies of Justice: Japanese and German War Criminals in the Postwar World, 1940s-60s." This one is pretty fascinating about guys carving millstones. I'd always thought they were roughed out then smoothed to millstones/grind stones in use to be flat. These guys are wizards to get 3 sides _flat_ with picks ready to be put into production. I didn't see them cutting lines for grain to follow and be distributed by but that might be something that is decided at the mill house depending on what is going to be ground and the speed it is run at.
