I'm not a historian though. They absolutely were socialists. Everything about them was. The Communist called everyone who did not believe like them fascists. Even with their later development into a form of fascism, the NSDAP was still socialist. Fascism is a modified form of socialism. It is collectivism. The Social Democrats were the majority party in 1912. So when Wilhelm II abdicated they were in charge, by default, being the largest Party in the Reichstag on 7 November 1918. But there were divisions within the SPD. SPD was pretty much for a status quo existence going back to a Germany before the war, while preaching and talking smack of revolution, but really being bourgeoisie. They were middle-class civil servants, merchant class, railway workers, etc. with a good living standard before the War. They gave the revolution lip-service but were more for the evolution kind. Also called Majoritians of the SD. Wanting to return to their standard of living pre-war with all the benefits of large government and socialism developed over the previous 40-50 years. The Independents (USPD) who were more hard-core than the bourgeois SPD. So they were for revolution but not the Bolshevik kind. These were more aligned with the unions. Shipbuilders, iron workers, factory peeps. the Spartacists were even more so 'socialist', a split off from the independents who were actual Bolsheviks. Wanting a bloody revolution. THis is the Luxemburg and Liebknecht types. Who became the Communist Democrat Party (KPD). They wanted a Red Army and a nationalization of banks and businesses. the Independents and the Spartacists were minoritarians of the SD. They were from the same group economically as the Independents, but with less stability in their workplace, laid off and temporary, the unskilled workers and permanently out of work. So when this shit kicked off with Eisner (USPD) in Munich winning in new elections to determine the government of the new People's Republic of Bavaria, in late 1918, It was from an outgrowth of the workers' and soldiers' councils springing up across the country after the fall of the monarchy. That brought the USPD to the top in Bavaria. He became minister-president of the new Bavarian People's Republic. Still socialist. But the plan did not work out as the place was still in chaos from post-war antics and occupation while working out the details for a formal surrender of Germany to the Allied Powers. So they held another election and the USPD came in way behind SPD. So he goes to resign, to turn in his resignation and gets shot by Arco- Valley just outside of the parliament on 21 February- and this creates a new set of problems as to who will govern. Riots and protests. The workers' and soldiers' council passed out guns. SPD claims itself the winner but is not recognized formally by the ruling body and weirdness continues. Mid-March Johannes Hoffman (SPD) claims he is the new minister-president of Bavaria. About three weeks later, the USPD and KPD decided differently. Toller claims he is the boss on 6 April, declaring Bavaria now the Bavarian Soviet Republic. Being more of an anarchist than a socialist, he declares all kinds of weird shit, made demands for a Red Army to oppress 'counter-revolutionaries', then even more nutbaggery ensuing through his cabinet and his government lasts only six days before the Bolsheviks- Levein, Levine and Axelrod- coup him out. Once in, they do built a Red Army, expropriated factories, and nationalized the banks. Meanwhile the SPD is still maneuvering and claiming rights to the office, with Hoffman still in the lead spot but having retreated to Bramburg. So this comes down to a battle (in Dachau) between Hoffmann's 8,000 man army against 30,000 'Red Army' dudes and Hoffman loses, but in the meantime, he cuts a deal with the Freikorps, with the backing of Ebert, for another army of 20,000 men to fight the Bolshevik forces and this time he wins. Capturing Dachau then moving on to Munich. So SPD claims victory after beating the Red Army and puts in their guy as head of Bavaria by way of Ebert's compromise with the Freikorps. It is a scale of socialism at work. Ranging from a nationalist take to an internationalist one. But its all socialism- of different shades. Hitler was elected deputy battalion representative by the Soldier Soviet Council (workers' and soldiers' council) in January 1919 in Bavaria under Eisner. And again to the same position in April 1919 under the Bolshevik government of Levein. From here he began to solidify his political ideology and this was how he got into the Inquiry Commission of the 2nd Infantry Regiment after shit settled out and had begun spying on Right Wing extremist political parties like the DAP and also to root out Bolshevik subversives. During the Kapp Putsch Hitler was sent by the army to Berlin to help with the coup. When they arrived in Berlin, Hitler and Dietrich Eckart immediately went to the Reichskanzlei to meet with Kapp but they were too late as Kapp had already fled Berlin, seeing the coup as a failure when Germans across the country went on strike protesting the putsch (declared a failure four days after it had begun on 17 March 1920). The German socialist movement (and much of the center) was about protesting the Treaty of Versailles, from the monetary penalties and loss of land, and in a fight against Bolshevism. And eventually, a right to colonize. Supported in no small part by the Junker/ Aristocrat class of the military after the elimination of Rohm sealed the deal. The Freikorps was a wide-ranging socialist thingy as well. Nationalists. Supposedly German Jewish veterans were members of some Freikorps units. Arco-Valley was a quarter Jewish and was trying to get into the Thule Society and supposedly that's how they got him to assassinate Eisner. ETA: not a historian but I like to read. |
