Sedig, PhD Ancient DNA (aDNA) data generated by the Proyecto de Investigación de Poblaciones Antiguas en el Norte y Occidente de México (PIPANOM) are providing new insight on the people who lived in central, western, and northern Mexico hundreds and thousands of years ago. Data from over 300 individuals spread across Mexico, including from archaeological sites such as Tzintzuntzan, Cueva de los Muertos Chicos, and Paquimé, have shed light onto long-standing questions about migration and interaction of different archaeological cultures in key eras of Mexico’s past. In this October 19, 2024, "Third Thursday Food for Thought" presentation for Old Pueblo Archaeological Center, archaeologist/geneticist Dr. Jakob Sedig discusses how the PIPANOM dataset has revealed previously unknown information about the individuals who lived at these sites, and how combining the PIPANOM data with previously published aDNA data from across the Americas allows researchers to understand better the movement and interaction of different groups across cultural boundaries. Dr. Sedig also reviews how the PIPANOM research has brought together archaeologists, geneticists, researchers, analysts, and students from different backgrounds and countries. |

Mimbres, the View from West Mexico featuring Dr. Michael Mathiowetz  Mimbres: the View from West Mexico featuring Dr. Michael Mathiowetz Current analyses indicate that the production of Mimbres Black-on-White ceramics (Style III) signified an ideological unity among socially diverse Classic Mimbres sites by AD 1000. The renowned Mimbres figurative ceramic tradition emphasized portrait-style depictions of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, humans, and narrative-style scenes of domestic and ritual significance. Some contend that this ideological unity and associated symbolism reflects a Maya Popol Vuh and Hero Twins narrative derived from the Huastec region of the Gulf Coast. However, other material, ideological, and genetic evidence indicates important Mimbres ties to Aztatlán societies along the Pacific coast of west Mexico. Political-ritual cargo systems in this latter region between AD 850/900–1350+ involved figurative or portrait-style cargo bowls with diverse animal, human, and deity representations that were used within maize-agricultural mitote and Flower World ceremonialism. In this talk, Mathiowetz contends that Aztatlán cargo systems and “god bowls”—the antecedent of ethnographically documented Huichol cargo systems—probably served as an inspiration for Mimbres artistic traditions, worldview, and social change. |

When Did People First Arrive in the Americas? with Dr. Todd Surovell  When Did People First Arrive in the Americas? with Dr. Todd Surovell Many archaeologists consider the Clovis/Pre-Clovis debate to be resolved, but most arguments in favor of a Pre-Clovis occupation of the Americas rely on the existence of one or a few anomalous archaeological sites. In this talk, Dr. Surovell will test the Clovis-first hypothesis by examining the stratigraphic integrity of stratified, multi-component sites across North America, from eastern Beringia in the north to Texas in the south. Dr. Surovell will show that the only sites older than Clovis with large numbers of artifacts and high levels of stratigraphic integrity exist north of the continental ice sheets. Furthermore, the first stratigraphically discrete archaeological components with more than a handful of artifacts appear in the Clovis period. This continent-wide patterning in the archaeological record provides clear and unambiguous support for the Clovis-first hypothesis. |

There are multiple ways to measure a “world-class” navy; what matters most are China’s own criteria informing its efforts toward that end. Capabilities-based benchmarks are a widespread measure of a navy’s level; PLA leadership appears focused on developing the capabilities that improve the PLAN’s proficiency to execute specified missions at the operational level of war. Xi seeks for his navy to surpass U.S.-level capabilities regarding PRC policy priorities by pursuing novel technological and developmental pathways to becoming the world’s most capable navy in these mission sets. China’s 2019 Defense White Paper (DWP) provides a roadmap for these missions. Only when the PLAN successfully integrates the means required to support the full range of these missions will Beijing perceive it has reached world-class status. By sowing doubt about PLAN capability to execute these missions, Washington can downgrade Party-military leadership perceptions about China’s world-class naval status and instill restraint. Speaker bio: Captain Christopher Sharman, USN (Ret.) has served as the Director of the U.S. Naval War College's widely respected China Maritime Studies Institute (CMSI) since October 2023. He comes to CMSI following a 30-year active-duty Navy career that included diplomatic postings at U.S. Embassies in both China and Vietnam and multiple operational afloat assignments with the Japan-based Forward Deployed Naval Forces.
