A 77-year-old North Carolina teacher has died of injuries suffered in a mysterious animal attack Friday in the small Beaufort County town of Pantego, according to a Monday Facebook post from the school where she worked.

Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office are still trying to determine what kind of animal was involved in the attack.

Beaufort County is home to bears, alligators and coyotes, but “preliminary DNA testing facilitated by NC Wildlife Biologist has eliminated any wild animals indigenous to the area,” said a statement issued by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Cougar. They found one in CT a few years back that was hit by a car. Since there aren't supposed to be any Eastern Mountain Lions left anywhere, the wildlife biologists did genetic testing and found it was from  1500 miles out west. It just wandered east until it got squished on a road.

It took TWRA a long time to admit big cats are in TN.  I never really understood why they denied it for so long.

In before the bigfoot experts and they would be wrong as this was clearly a mothman / rake hybrid alien poltergeist that did this.

WVDNR's position is that native cats are extinct and any that we come across are just really far from home.

Panther.

I've seen them near Myrtle Beach (just across the state line in Brunswick County NC) several counties away from Beaufort, but there is a ton of swamp.

Of course officially they don't live there.

One of those monster hunter shows supposedly got trailcam footage of one in Brunswick County a year or so after I saw one.

Because then they'd have to put resources into managing the populations.  Same reason WV DNR won't admit we have big cats in this state.

They claimed the same thing here even though multiple people had seen them.    Finally one got hit by a car on the interstate and they had to admit they were around.    Years later they had to shoot one in town.

What I heard about why wildlife agencies deny claims about big cats in the east is if there are big cats then they are endangered. Endangered animals cost money out of budgets, if it is a case of one being out of their natural habitat no plan is needed. Once the population is large enough then the agency can state that the species is in the area in large enough numbers to not need protection. But that is just what I was told at my club by one of the older hunters.

Good luck getting the state to admit it, they won’t here in Michigan even after one was killed.

Admitting it means having to pay to manage them.
