Been watching the history channel and tonight it was on the dam busters in WWII.

Something I don't quite understand is,

Why couldn't they simply use marine type torpedoes?

I fully understand how the bombs they used worked and I understand how torpedoes of the time worked and their depth requirements.

Why wouldn't a torpedo have done the job?

Torpedo nets set back from the dam prevented this style of attack. This is why the bouncing bomb was designed, so the bomb would skip along the surface avoiding the nets and only submerging once it hit the dam.

Barnes Wallis, inventor of the skip bomb was there when the survivorsof the raid returned.

Prior to the raid he was a 'Cheerio, old Boy. We're going to get Jerry's feet wet' kind of guy that thought it was a big game of some sort.

As he realized the missing planes that didn't arrive meant youn British men had died his entire attitude changed.
