Mothman has long been described as having large wings, and large red eyes. The Sandhill Crane has large wings and big red eyes. They also make a creepy deep chirping call. They are also in their migration season heading south. Probably explains the increase in "sightings".

Nothing more than a large bird with big red eyes heading south.
