GD with Honorable discharge Usually some medical condition (stroke, heart attack etc which leaves the individual unable to preform his/her military duties.
Had a cousin who was with the Old Guard Band at Arlington. He had been in about 20 years planning on 30 when he had a serious stroke with a lot of brain damage. They kept him in until there was nothing more they could do.
Received a General Discharge - Honorable.
He passed recently but was always sensitive about having the "Honorable" used in family genealogical papers, work and books. Reminded my mom (who did most of the publications) many times that he had a General Discharge.
I always figured his damaged brain just could not handle the full terminology or he thought that people were mentally seeing "Less than Honorable"
