Is this chain on the right way? The teeth look different than any of the videos I've seen. Feels sharp in either direction.
Direction of travel is left to right in photo.
Looking over dads chainsaw because "it doesn't work right". Lol.

That chain looks pretty cached out.

What direction is the drive link facing?  It should be pointed forward.

That chain is hammered.

Also a skip tooth.

Looks to be on right however.

It’s the correct direction but that chain is junked and needs replaced.

Yea time for another. Also with the double rakers (that don’t appear to have ever been filed) and the bumper, it appears this is an safety chain. You don’t see the double rakers often.

Double rakers are used in specially chains. And the intent was to assist in a straighter cut.  The third bumper = safety chain.

Correct direction, but worn out "low kick back" chain.

Dads chainsaw. He said it isn't working right... So I cleaned all the crap out of it and taking a general assessment of what is wrong.

Thanks everyone for pointing out the chain condition. Will replace that. And give my dad a refresher on not cutting Boulders in half with chainsaws. Apparently.

Yes, but that chain is in bad shape.

Chainsaws aren't meant to be trenchers.

It's an electric saw. Does that make a difference as to the chain type?

For that chain, I don't think it really matters.
Link Posted: 6/15/2023 8:45:54 AM EST
[#15]
Not really.  As long as its the right length, pitch and guage it can be the same chain any of the little gas saws run.

Is this the chain type it needs? 91-62?

Possibly.  It is a skip chain so usually you do that when you are at a long bar length for power ratio.   Skipping every other tooth cuts down on the chain resistance which keeps up the chain speed so it cuts better.

Probably makes sense on an electric if torque isn't great.

You can Google Oregon 91-62. Pretty sure that’s a 18” 3/8 .050 62dl

16" sounds like a lot of bar for what appears to be an older small electric saw.   The new battery ones have lots of torque but this one seems to be pretty lightly made.   You should try to find the same skip chain if you want to keep that 16" bar.

Yep.  It's correct.

Red circles are the teeth.  The other things are the anti-kickback links.

It is some sort of whacky chain Oregon puts on their electric saw.

That saw has a built in sharpening system and uses a chain different from most others.
The chain is on correctly.
Run the saw while pulling the red lever for 5 or 10 seconds.
If it doesn’t make sparks then the chain is wore out.
I made a slab wood processor using this kind of saw and it has worked very well for several years.
We burn about 30 bundles of oak slabs per year in an outdoor boiler and we have worn out one of these saws and are on the second one after 8 years.
I don’t think the average home owner would cut enough to wear out that saw.

My FIL has an older battery powered saw with like a 12" bar.
I've seen him cutting stumps out with it.
When he's cutting fire wood he doesn't give a second thought to running the blade into the ground.
His chain probably looks worse than OPs.

As others have mentioned, it has a self sharpening system of some sort.  I sharpened the chain and did some test cuts. Cuts like a champ. Was impressed by it. Just a goofy chain I guess.

I think the main issue dad was having with it was the bar was all loaded up with muck. And wasn't tensioned right.

A coworker would dig the tip in the ground at every opportunity. We did storm, and fire trail cleanup mostly.

That’s not a skip chain. Here’s a diagram showing the difference between full como, skip, and semi-skip. There’s also a hyper skip that has even fewer cutters.
