I have had Kindle papwerwhites since they first came out. I love to be able to carry books with me wherever I go and I read a lot. I have 2 of the latest paperwhites, one EDC and one that stays at the beside. But I saw this little thing on the social medias and thought it had to be bullshit, but the more I researched it, I had to try it. It came today and is smaller than my iPhone 17 pro. It is tiny... but that's the draw of it for me. The current paperwhite, while small, is hard to hold with one hand and read. This thing has touch screen, backlight, magsafe magnet, and physical buttons. Not a bad deal for $100. There are no apps, games, etc... epub/pdf reader only. It does kick me out of the Kindle ecosystem where I have approx 1500+ books I have purchased and only about 1/3 are available to be downloaded as epub/pdf... but that's ok. I seldom read a book twice, so it is just a matter of finding a different source for books. So if you are a current ereader, or want something to carry around instead of doomscrolling... give it a try. I use a Kindle app on my phone which has a lot of adjustable settings. I use it a lot with dark mode, but it has 'paper-white' as an option, and can be used on many devices. I used it on a tablet for a while, so I could read in bed without disturbing wife with a light. It works on a phone, but the smaller screen is less convenient. I use it to read stuff while I'm in waiting rooms or other places where I have time to kill. It's like having a library in my pocket - even though I only have a small library compared to yours. |

My problem is it’s too distracting reading on a phone. Even if I silence my notifications it’s too tempting to check email, texts, arfcom… and once you start you don’t go back to reading. And there is the glare from the screen if you are in direct sunlight. |

If I want to read on a phone format, I'll read on my phone. And I do. If I want to read big big, I also have a tablet. If I want a specific e-ink experience I want something bigger than a phone. Paperwhite and Kindle are 300ppi on 6 or 7in 219ppi on the X4Pro which means it is a meer 800x480 4.3" screen like a smartphone from 16+ years ago. That's not a useful reading resolution or format for me. X4 is a neat device but not a fun reader for me. I just got a paperwhite to replace my mark1 mod0 kindle. I fucking love it! |
| I would like a tablet or similar to read magazines as full page size that I can checkout online from my local online library. Currently I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ Plus 11” 64GB Android Tablet, but I have to pan around to see the page. If I zoom out to fit a full page it is harder to read the print. |

I have the older, non touchscreen, no backlight x4 with the physical buttons. I really like it once I got used to the small screen. I’ve usually been reading with it in landscape layout. It is pretty neat to be able to carry an ereader in a pocket with my phone or in a chest pocket. I cannot read books on my phone as it gives me a headache after a while vs an e-ink screen. I would love it if they made a version with the physical buttons and backlight…I don’t need the touch screen. |

I loaded CrossInk firmware… you can turn the touchscreen completely off and navigate with the buttons. Turn it back on to navigate the menus. |

Have had a Kindle Paperwhite for quite a few years. The amazing thing is how it looks like a physical page in direct sunlight. That’s its sole advantage, to me; reading in direct sunlight. I prefer reading at night/in the evenings, and actually prefer the Kindle app in Dark mode on my phone over the Paperwhite, for the exact reason in the OP; it’s much easier to read/hold one handed. White letters on a black page (on OLED screens especially), are also easily legible at night with very little light spill (compared to any other option). |

I have an original Nook, but the bezel is all jacked up so I can touch the actual buttons underneath and the replaceable battery is on its last legs. I can't decide if I should trust an eBay replacement or get a replacement ereader and lose all the progress tracked across all the PDFs I've loaded via Calibre.

I prefer Audible. Listening to them allows you to do other tasks as well, like driving or menial work of Washing car or painting and basically everything that doesn't need continual communication with others. Looking at the size of it, I couldn't read it anyway, font way too small, I'd need a full newspaper size e-ink paper, well, half one of an A3 sheet or something that I could set up with bigger fonts and flip through. I use 120% fonts on forum and am quite far sighted so I need reading glasses, one eye way more than other so glasses are useless to wear outside, just for reading since outside everything is blurry and messes me up. |

The battery life is nuts, too. I get like 3-4 weeks of use between charges. I have a faux leather case for it that I can wedge my index finger between the reader and the case, which makes it easy to hold one handed. |

I also use a paperwhite, but I'm not a huge fan of being locked into the Amazon UI with it. I toyed around with custom firmware, but couldn't get it configured the way I wanted. If I was going to get another one, I would look pretty hard at the offerings from Kobo right now. |
