That size is game over depending where it hits...  in a populated area/metro area, god help us!

Hell the 94 6.7 Northridge killed 57. But the 92 7.3 Landers death was minimal.

It basically hit my old desert camp and shoot spot behind Calico Ghost Town hills.  Tourists got more than just a mine ride today.

That would be a tragedy. Most of us wish no bad on the 150 people who aren’t absolute trash humans left in California.

My dad took us to a truck stop there one time to get a replacement for a blown radiator hose while we were on a road trip to Colorado.

I'm sure Barstow will be back to its normal gross national product within a few generations.

Shook the house and scattered the cat.

The rare 2-3 magnitude just rolls the house.

to Cail earthquakes. I was there for the Whittier quake '87.

Last I looked, the freeway was open again both ways but not sure it said the fire was out.  Scary.  Some people just hung out in the stopped traffic.  Kind of surprised nobody died from the heat and traffic problems.

I sure felt that one even though I was a considerable distance from the epicenter.  I was eating breakfast alone while my parents and brother were sleeping - I had an early morning music class and had to be on the bus by about 6:30 AM.  The ground motion was slow and smooth, and kept going for a LONG time.  A hanging lamp over the dining room table swung for several minutes.

According to the Wikipedia article only three people were directly killed, all at a hospital.  Two died due to failure of equipment, one had stuff fall on him.  Some others died of heart attacks.

That could have been a lot worse, and if it happens again it probably will be.

Yeah 5 is the sweet spot,  not likely to really fuck anything modern up but you get the full experience of feeling the ground move under your feet.

It's not just the moving, it's when the previously solid ground underneath you suddenly feels not so solid anymore and it feels more like you're standing on top of a boat with the freaky wavy movements that makes the ground underneath feel like water.

Shit. Can you imagine being in one of those little mine shaft touristy things they have at Calico and the earth start shaking?  Earthquakes don’t bother me much.  Neither do hurricanes for that matter, but if I was in a mine I might start to run towards the light pretty quick.
