Holmes received a significant amount of funding from conservatives, like Rupert Murdoch and the DeVos family foundation, who were willing to risk tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars of their own money to fund something revolutionary, but the folks who were so prominently trying to align themselves with her and get a boost from her fame and supposed innovation were almost exclusively Democrats, who didn't risk a dime. Obama appointed Holmes to his Presidential Ambassadors for Global Entrepreneurship (PAGE) initiative, Biden toured the Theranos factory with his PR team and press corps, Hillary used Holmes for fundraising, and her husband Bill put Holmes on stage at his Clinton Global Initiative summit, telling the crowd, "Don't worry about the future, we're in good hands." And she had similar support from leftist higher education, including Harvard, whose Medical School Board appointed her as a Fellow, when she had not achieved anything, other than performing cooked demos and making promises. And when Holmes learned the WSJ was investigating and her fraud might be revealed, she traveled to see Rupert Murdock and beseeched him to have the story stopped, and he refused, stating he would not interfere with his paper's investigations, even if he lost his entire investment in Theranos as a result. Actual integrity. And what did Hillary do when the story broke? She skipped the fundraiser she had planned with Holmes, but still held it, with Holmes, and had Chelsea go to represent her and pickup the donation checks. |

I explained to her that even if true that might only be worth 10% of the valuation and it was the 90% valuation which was what the scam was. At the time IIFC she had patented processes so I did a patent search on her and the company. I found one patent (or maybe it was an application) and it didn't seem to be a process that made possible the testing that she claimed. |

A factor that was at least as formative in her development was the fact her father descended from the founder of Fleischmann's yeast, who amassed substantial wealth, but that wealth was squandered by subsequent generations, including her grandfather. Her father often bragged about his/their connection to that founder and wealth, but he inherited almost nothing, and being the first generation without any generational wealth was apparently a sore point for the family. Making matters worse, while he was driven to be successful and regain wealth and status for his family, he wasn't. And didn't. In fact, after he lost his Enron job, he was forced to rely on the charity of a wealthy neighbor and family friend, eventually moving his family into a spare home that neighbor had, rent free. The overall experience seemed to drive Elizabeth to become not just successful but extremely wealthy at a very early age. When a family friend asked her what she wanted to be when she was quite young, she replied, "A billionaire." Not a job. A level of wealth. And even as a child she was sketching inventions to realize that goal. But like her blood analyzer, the time machine she sketched in her notebook was a cool idea, but also science fiction. The same applied to the first version of the blood analyzer she sketched out, which was essentially a band-aid that not only could analyze your blood, but could also dispense a wide range of medications based on the results. And this wasn't a design she came up with as a child. This was something she came up with as a Freshman at Stanford. It was absolutely laughable, and folks in the biotech field she presented it to told her as much. But she was undaunted. The thing is, she really wasn't trying to trick anyone, at least with respect to her overall goal. She was just delusional about what was possible, and refused to listen to reason from anyone. And she was also absolutely ruthless as she tried to achieve that goal, willing to lie, fake demos, and crush anyone who threatened her or her company. Even worse, she was willing to risk patient lives, which she did. And it sucks they were not able to convict her for crimes related to that aspect of her fraud. |
