Oof. Without knowing the details, lucky guy. I drive through deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and stupid people most mornings. It's no joke. The joke is our "near hit" reporting program in safety here at work. The idiots over on the left coast think seeing a deer on the side of the road while they're driving is a "near hit." If I filled out a report every time that happened...well...I'd be getting paid to fill out reports. Probably on overtime.

He must have been going under 20mph, maybe 10-15mph to just have road rash on his forehead and no severe concussion/skull damage. Looks like he wasn't wearing a helmet and was just going along the winding roads around his place up into the mountains and back or something, he lives right on the edge of Rockies IIRC. I've seen several idiots pass me in the black hills where the road is posted 25 mph with corners posted as 15 mph with Caution signs all over and caution signs when another road has a Tee intersection with the one you are on. I like camping there but not when Sturgis is live or 2 weeks either side of it. Still, seen it plenty where I'll be lazily driving and watching for deer and a bike will blow past at 60 mph and then vanish on the next turn and 2 minutes later them and their bike are horizontal across the road because the gravel dragged from the tee intersection is like ball bearings while they think it's still a curvy race track. About half can get an assist, straighten the front forks and limp the bike to a dealer in the nearest big town, the other half without helmets need an ambulance and people just help get the bike to the side of the road. The 600/750 cc bikes were more likely to survive the turn with just road rash while the liter bikes were the ones that went down and slid quite far until they hit rocks. |

| When things go wrong motorcycles don't play nice. I myself have been extremely lucky to have never crashed on a street bike in 50+ years of riding on the street. More close calls than I care to count but never an actual crash. Dirt bikes I would typically crash and jump up laughing unless I twisted an ankle or something which I managed to do numerous times. I would love to go back to dirt riding but this old body might disagree with that idea. |
