Yeah, nothing new. The term was common when I bussed and then waited tables at a nicer restaurant through high school around '94-98. Not all of course, but a lot of Canadians tend to be extremely demanding customers who rarely tip. It is what it is.

My wife's experience waiting tables mirrors most that have been stated in this thread. She worked in an area with a high number of Pentecostal people and she said they were absolutely horrible tippers with horrible manners to boot.
When I delivered pizzas, the absolute worst tippers were teachers with any church organization being a very close second. |

My buddy just moved to L.A. from Texas. As he is driving through South Central, he sees a restaurant that said "The BEST Gumbo west of the Mississippi". SO he figured... why the hell not?
He walks in and he is the only white guy in the restaurant. Everyone giving him the eye. Both staff and patrons. He walks up to the counter and this BIG black guy behind the counter just blurts out "ARE YOU LOST?" Mikey says in his heavy southern drawl "Nah man, I would like a bowl of your gumbo please" Guy says "I think you are lost and maybe you should keep movin'" The guys grandmother comes from the kitchen and says "Is there a problem here?" Mikey says "No problem ma'am, I just saw the sign that you serve the best gumbo west of the Mississippi and I wanted to try it" Grandma SLAPS the big guy upside his head and yells at him "IF THIS GENTLEMAN WANTS THE BEST GUMBO WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI, YOU SERVE HIM THE BEST GUMBO WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI!!" Big guy cowers and says "yes grandma"... He then looks at Mikey and says "This is to go... RIGHT?" and to which Mikey says, "Nah... I can eat it here" He sits down and eats his gumbo. Still getting stared down by everyone in the restaurant. When he was done, he walks the empty bowl to the counter and THOROUGHLY compliments grandma on the food and he said "That sign is not lyin' That truly IS the BEST gumbo west of the Mississippi" and walks out. |

I don`t give a damn. Restaurant staff uses a code word about a type of customer that usually does not tip. Wanna change that perception, leave a decent tip. I tip well for good service, not for who your parents were. But without fail, if I go into a place where nobody working there looks like me, service is in the tank. Everybody is rude, food is squashed, service is either slow or non-existant. If I enter & I can tell that my money is not gonna buy a good meal & experience, I just turn around & leave. fuck it, feed yourselves.

When my wife was a waitress back in Alabama, the black waitresses would usually agree to take care of them. They knew.
Obviously couldnt always happen but frequently. No code words. Just “black folks” Related. The “church folks” on sunday who would leave a bulletin as a tip. People took turns. “You got the next group of church folks” |
