I watched one utility company level the entire site including substation. They're in the process of replacing the sub now. Unless we're all going to go off grid, we need a grid that has some central planning by technical people not political appointees or MBA's. This folks is shortage and an intentional one. The less supply the higher the cost. That dispatcable cushion is roughly 4% of peak demand not a hell of a lot of margin for when things go south and one of the reasons we almost lost the grid last April when the wind stopped blowing and thermal units were down for maintenance. The minimum clearance is going to be based on line voltage, but ultimately it will come down to the ROW easement the utility has. |

That's an excellent question. I think the answer is its cheaper to fund a PAC to get the gov to improve your infrastructure than to pay for the upgrades yourself. The DC uses very little water and about 50% more electricity than the previous business. It is also much quieter then people expected. They pay about 3 times the property tax of the previous business. I am sure all of the home owners hate lower property taxes.  Did they go down? Best info I can find is Cook county re-assessed the village last year, increasing homes taxable value by 30%, and then something about the pre-build property tax estimate of a Microsoft DC at 900 million, but re-assessed to $250 million after the fact (some sort of deal with the city). It is quite possible the politicians spent the extra money. Funny how the mayor didn’t say that the assessment was reduced. The radio show was in late August. Tax bills were mailed in late August and due by October 1st. I am not sure if the data center belongs to Microsoft. I did not hear who owned the data center and there could be several in the area. A company I know of was looking at data centers in that area about 10 years ago. |
