I went in right out of high school. It was the draft lottery period and I was not a very good student. I wasn't going straight to college after graduation. My brother had been drafted into the Army, and my Dad had served in the Navy in WWII. My brother was a field radio operator / repairman. I knew I wanted to be different so I enlisted in the MARINES under an aviation guarantee. I was confident that I would not work in electronics, nor would I go to sea since I was an "Airdale." So when we got our MOS determination I was shocked. I was sent to Aviation Electrician A School.
I got through that ok and reported to my squadron at MCAS New River, Jacksonville, NC. I got there in June and in August I found myself putting out to sea headed for the North Atlantic. So much for my planned path. That was the first of two cruises. My second cruise was a deployment with the 31st MAU (Marine Amphibious Unit). Now I think they call them Marine Expeditionary Units (MEU). We floated around in the Mediterranean Sea for about seven months. So, I was first a rifleman as are ALL MARINES, my secondary was an Aviation Electrician. I have always paid attention to things around me, I was never sure who wanted to hurt me or my buddies. I'm older now so it is easier to go unnoticed when I'm out and about. I still pay close attention to details. ETA: I forgot to mention I had been to see the Army recruiters to sign up for the Warrant Officer Flight Program. At the time the Army was taking high school graduates and making them Warrant Officer pilots. Just my luck, the program was closed when I visited the recruiter. So, I made contact with the MARINE recruiter since they offered an aviation guarantee. |

I was in (Army) when I found out about the WO list for flight school.
that list just grew, never made any progress the entire time. I don't have that much patience. |
