Knock on wood I haven’t had to use my POA but in general people with FOP representation seem to fare better and get more support. I think the POA issue is a lot of the reps have ties to the department and even though it shouldn’t be a conflict lets me honest it is. You have a patrol officer who is a rep going against brass there’s going to be issues right? What’s the best route to go? |
| I'm firmly FOP all the way. They are only going to stand up for you on duty. They also tend to get fairly competitive labor contracts. Just be warned that they tend to toss you under the bus if you are being a jack off on the job. Off duty issues just aren't their thing. The odds of me shooting or otherwise harming someone in the line of my official duties is far far more probable than off duty. |

SSPBA got in a class action lawsuit, turns out that outside of an OIS, they can pick and choose what they want to defend... So fuck them. FOP is a crap shoot. I am still an active member. Best bet is get a couple of local attorneys on retainer, one for criminal, and one for admin type jams. Way more expensive, but... I'd hazard way more effective. |

I'm with a local one. I'm sure the FOP is a great organization. A lot of guys are members of both. Our local one literally goes to city council meetings and fights for raises and deals with the politicians for local issues. I really doubt the FOP president is going to be coming down wheeling and dealing with politicians to try to make our job better or fight for important issues. Its also headed up entirely by active LE and we vote on who runs it every year. Our primary attorney was married to a police officer for a long time. And she's close friends with a few female officers at our department. She'll represent us for on duty or off duty matters. She even does our divorces for 'free'. Which I find hilarious but I guess she's just practical. |
