@Green0 Tagging Austin for the knowledge. Looking at printing 3d printed suppressors (still getting a DL5AM though). TLDR: This is a thought exercise to lighten the final product. There is a printed silencer, FTN.5 Rifle that requires an aluminum tube for reinforcement, the printed can is slathered in 2 part JB Weld and then the aluminum tube is slid over, adding hoop strength, and I assume axial strength as well. Here's my question, more for a thought exercise than anything else. The suppressor is about 8 inches long, divided into 5th's. The first section is the mount, the next is blast chamber, then 3 baffles/chambers. My question is, from a stress, weight reduction standpoint of view, is the hoop stress equal from blast chamber to the distal chamber. On Griffin Silencers, do you make your wall thickness consistent from front to back or could one reduce wall thickness toward the tip? If hoop stress lessens toward the distal end, approximately how much (25%, 50%?...). I watched several SmarterEveryDay videos with see through silencers and certain designs seem to capture the bulk of blast in the first few chambers, reducing as it nears the distal end. |

I spent several hours on the web last night and according to Google (I know....) The hoop forces as the blast travels down the silencer reduce dramatically toward the tip, ending up near atmospheric pressure before exiting. I'm not certain I believe that last part though. I gave me a fairly conservative firing schedule, but one item I could not determine was how fast the heat transferred from the blast to the PA6. Here are the numbers: The calculations showing an internal yield threshold of 3,500+ PSI for the final composite system were done using the original thick-walled aluminum tube (0.0675 inch wall thickness). 1500-3000 psi initial blast shockwave. I cut the alu. tube thickness in half but per G., there is not enough allowance for safety concerns when heated up. Geometry Breakdown Used in the Final Math Aluminum Tube: Outside Diameter = 2.010 inches | Inside Diameter = 1.875 inches | Thickness = 0.0675 inches PA6-CF Liner: Outside Diameter = 1.821 inches thickness 3/16 in Solid Epoxy Filler: Wall Thickness = 0.027 inches per side |
