Twenty years ago, my oldest daughter and I went to an air show, and I got an interesting education about the Corsair.

This old man was grumbling to himself while one was flying, muttering something about ‘gettin’ that ‘sumbitch back onboard’. I asked him about it, and he said that he was the kid on-deck with the paddles, and that recovering the Corsair was a gold-plated bitch. Something about the length of the struts and propellor blades making it difficult for the pilots to ‘feel’ where they were on the glide slope. He said that it was more common than he wanted to remember for one to come in too high, bounce halfway down the deck, and be unable to climb back out. The result was a splash in front of the boat, and too often, a drowned pilot.
The British figured out how to modify the landing gear to reduce deck bounce on landing.
The British also figured out the LANDING PATTERN that allowed the pilot to keep view of the decks, which the LONG nose of the Corsair often obscured in the old "Traditional" approach.

The combination of Landing Pattern, Modification to the Struts & the addition of an Anti-stall warning tab on one wing made a huge difference in the Corsair & Carriers.

Wildcat fun fact:  Most ww2 planes had a "do not exceed" speed so you didn't rip the wings off.  Not the Wildcat.  It was so sturdy it's terminal velocity due to drag in a dive was lower than the do not exceed.    That let it dive out of a turning fight with zeros who could not dive as fast.  Love that stubby little bugger.
