With my daughter being in the NICU I've been to the hospital pretty much every day and have a newfound respect for the hospital staff. That being said I'd imagine they've all seen some weird and creepy stuff |

Got sent to a call of a man hit by a train one night. We get there, the train is now stopped and about midway back is a guy laying on his back, filthy, and one arm missing at the elbow. Joking around, one of the other Tprs with me kicked his leg and said “You okay buddy?” Guy jumped and said “Yeah what happened”? I about shit myself, then we all started laughing. He was so drunk, he didn’t even know a train ran over and cut off his arm. There was almost no blood, like the wheels/tracks cauterized it. Ambulance took him away and he lived. |

The first time I smelled gangrene, it was a 16-17yr old girl who had skipped school and went joyriding, and ended up getting ejected from the car. She cam in through the ER and we got her back. She ended up going to surgery where they did some work in her stomach. But they couldnt finish up and sew her up. Instead, they left her split open, with laces on each side of the wound. A couple times a day, the ICU nurse would unlace her and clean out the bandages they had packing the wound. Then replace the bandages, and lace her back up like a football. After a while, she developed gangrene due to flesh eating bacterial infection. If I happened to walk past the room around the time the nurses were cleaning her out, I caught a whiff. That is the smell of living death. It works its way into your brain and wont leave. Its been a good 15yr since I smelled it, and I remember it like it was yesterday. That is what the zombie apocalypse will smell like. In the operating room, they use straight up power tools. I had to do a rotation through there with the anesthesia guys. I watched a couple total hip and total knee replacements. The surgeons are up in the table, using powertools that said dewalt on the side to cut through leg bone. And then using hammers to pound the new prosthetic into the bone. And then the patient will be woken up a couple hours later and be expected to start getting up and walking on the thing. Speaking of the operating room and back to the smells, they commonly use a cauterizing tool in the OR. It cuts and it stops the bleeding all at once. The smell of burning flesh smells like burning hair. |

One night I got sent over in the middle of a night shift to watch the telemetry monitors at a smaller satellite hospital. The telemetry setup was in the hospital's old ICU, which was no longer in use for patients. I'd been in that ICU lots of times. My grandmother had been in there. My stepdad had been in there. I'd taken many patients there and picked up others who were leaving. Now it was just silent and I was alone in there. I was sitting there watching the monitors and contemplating how many personal tragedies those rooms had seen when a cold blast of air hit me in the back out of nowhere. Fucking air conditioner kicked on and I almost shit myself. |

Plenty of instances of women who were very likely being trafficked getting brought to the ER for a one over or shot of rocephin to fix whatever VD their last … ahem … “boyfriend “ gave them. Usually spoke little English and accompanied by a male who regarded them in the same way a farmer regards one of his milk cows. Eh, not the ER’s job to be the police. If they want something they can say something. Multiple cases of EMS straight up murdering someone through gross malpractice. Occasional nursing home patient that got brought in septic with their tail bone and pelvis sticking out of the gaping decubitus ulcer that used to be their butt. Always fun when you can place your hand in an ulcer and not have it touch any of the edges. Random ATV’er or SxS rider that nearly successfully murdered themselves on the mountain or at least severed some body parts. On the floor, Fourier’s gangrene, after debriedment. Nothing quite like pulling the sheets back and seeing a skinned penis and two testicles hanging out like a pair of macarenas without the scrotum. Had a convicted child killer living on the floor. He had some street justice handed to him and was too incapacitated to go back to prison, so he basically lived on the floor with 24/7 nursing for the rest of his life. Some ex-drug dealer who got shot in the back of the neck and ended up a quad. For attention, he would stab himself and eventually lost his legs. Moved up and started repeatedly eviscerating himself. Eventually he did it right and formed too high an EC fistula and ended up slowly starving to death because he no longer had a working digestive tract. Could probably keep going on for a while. |

One evening my beeper went off and I ran to a room where there was a lifelong alcoholic coding. I jumped in and we were trying to intubate to get an airway. He had really bad esophageal varices. They were bleeding, like a shitload. Blood was coming out his mouth and nose like a volcano. After we finally got the tube in his trachea, we suctioned out an insane amount of blood from his lungs. I believe he died there on the bed, drowned in his own blood. And thats the day I learned all about esophageal varices, the hard way. Another patient I had was a frequent flyer with breathing difficulties due to a lifetime of smoking. This time he was in for a lobectomy - getting a chunk of his lung removed. Even as he was there in the hospital for that type of surgery, he was still trying to sneak out of his room and smoke cigarettes in the stairwell or in the parking garage. I dont think he lasted much longer. |

Had a guy come in this weekend paralyzed from the neck down from a dirtbike crash. The trauma doc told him they were rolling him over to check his rectal tone. His reply was.” I guess I don’t have to worry about feeling that anymore.” We had a guy the day before that come in from the same riding area, paralyzed from the nipples now. 17 and 33 years old… |

Was working with the homeless under a city contract. Checking on a encampment when a bunch of them started yelling. Depressed dude put a giant zip tie around his neck and pulled it as tight as he could. Couldn’t do shit for him until he lost consciousness. Later at the hospital he told me it was a huge mistake, he thought he would wake up in heaven and it was way worse than he imagined. Duh. Charge nurse was flirting with me while I was there. She found me on Instagram and invited me out for a beer via DM. Nurses are easy. She could put her legs over her head and the soles of her feet on the headboard next to her ears. |
| Similar story I have shared here, Working a cardiac arrest inside a dark shotgun house with wood floors. Its 105 and the hoarding has been pushed to the sides of the room. In the clearing the 300 lb lady is laying on the floor. Im holding a surefire in my mouth while spiking an IV bag and pulling some meds. The lights getting hot in my mouth ,Im sweating profusely, im itching ,Im fucking dying. I happen to shine the light towards her neck and notice there is a dark bolus stuck in her tracheostomy. I tell the airway guy to suction to clear the snot slug. This is common (also always makes me gag) He pulls off the BVM and the plug starts to come up with chest compressions. Except its fucking dozens of roaches. They had blocked her airway. I freak a little, then I shine the light in the bag for the larger suction cath. I then notice there are motherfucking thousands of bean sized roaches in my bag and on me . They are up my legs. On my unit , everywhere. I had to go outside to get them off me. No one else was attacked. Im convinced the roaches killed her... |

WE had a rescue call. Mom,Dad, and 2 kids. WE got the Dad and kids packaged and in the Ambulance. The mom was standing between myself and a Sheriff deputy. The mom looks around and says "I guess everything will be ok now, right?" We looked at her and said yes. and she was just gone. looking down the mom was passed out on the ground. I looked at the deputy and asked him "why didn't he catch her"? "his response was that's your job." We loaded her up and left for the hospital. |

Dude built his own guillotine. Except he didn’t use an angled blade. Cop says “well at least it was quick” he didn’t notice his head was still attached or the 6 inch deep claw marks on the ground. He built it outside on gravel. He clawed through 6” of gravel. He suffered for a loooooong time. I figure the blade came down and pinned him to the frame. His landlord found him. Landlord said he noticed he was building a guillotine. The weird fact that my wife got hazard pay during Covid. She had worked from home for years before Covid hit. I transported 240ish Covid patients and only got a small check from the government, wanna say it was $800. |

Quoted: My ambulance got into a head on with a goose a couple of weeks ago. Damn thing was taking off from the street. Flew straight into the grill. I pulled to the left, but it changed its flight angle and made a bee line. I was almost at a stop when it hit. I smoked a turkey at 70mph. The windshield barely held together. Creepy dead lady. We get a call for a protective services case. Turns out meemaw was sent home to her daughters house (full of roaches, lice, bedbugs, etc) and the visiting nurse called APS. APS called us and told us to take her to the hospital. We show up and are making PPE. Precovid we didn’t have PPE for the most part. We take sheets and make a poncho. We duct tape pillowcases to our legs and make boot covers. As we are doing this, the daughter comes out and asks when we are going to do anything about her not breathing. We all run into the house. Sure enough. She is dead. We grab all our gear and start a code. One guy says we need PD to our dispatcher on the radio. PD shows up. This is a very ghetto area we are in. The cops see a bunch of guys in sheets doing cpr. You can see the confusion on their face. Anyways. The one cop was here earlier in the day and tells us she has a DNR. It’s on her table by her bed. Sweet. We call it. Call the doc. Get a time of death. We start cleaning her up. Getting our trash off her and hunting down any remenent that we were ever there. As we do this our monitor shifts a bit. Just enough to hit the button to raise the head of her bed. The slowest and creakiest bed ever made. One cop (black guy) freaks out, screams “oh hell naw!” and draws his gun. He thought she was a zombie or something. |

I was walking down a darkened hallway in my scrubs on the orthopedic floor one night at about 2:00 am and happened to glance into a patient room that gave off the light of a TV. Saw a guy with two leg casts doing a head stand like this. Had another old guy pull out a pint of whiskey from his bedside drawer and take a swig before being wheeled down for some labs. He had someone smuggle it in. I just laughed. Another time I was bringing some spent O2 tanks down to the storage room in the basement and there was a door next to it that was always locked. There was a red lightbulb glowing above the door and so I tried the knob. This time it was unlocked. I went in to poke around and no one was inside. After a few minutes I realized I was starting to feel funny. I looked closer and saw that I was in a medical waste and spent radiation container room! I was being radiated to the point of getting dizzy and I got the hell out of there. Attached File |

Missed the fetus, no real damage. The surgeon walked in on her getting plowed doggy style by her nasty, grwasy (literally) husband. Her husband was so nasty (diesel mechanic) that on her discharge, we had to relace carpet. |

I don’t know. I’ve responded to so many suicides, murders………. A crazy thing was…… it was a 10-68 call which is the code for mental subject. So EMS is calling, I arrive and this guy is saying this he is tired of seeing demons and accuses myself of being one. After several minutes of trying to train with him he starts gouging at his eye balls…… He runs off and I give chase, tackle him, and turn him over while he is clawing at his eye balls…. He ripped both of them out and had them in his hands squishing them…. I was straddling him and had his hands pinned by his side and just starting to realize that he had ripped his eyes out…. I was trying to get EMS to help but they were completely frozen. I call for back up, but have like forever to kill because everyone was busy and we are of course, coughSHORTSTAFFEDcough. We had a normal conversation until EMS snapped out of it and brought a stretcher with restraints. He was like, brother I am probably going to regret this. I was like yea, your eyes are pretty damaged. I don’t think they are salvageable. He was like you’re probably right- I can’t believe I did this. I was like yea I tried to stop you…. Then he undid his hands and dropped them. They were like squished grapes. He said thank you and I said sorry. |

First if all, God bless your daughter. Mine was in the NICU for 3 months. Thank God for the Ronald McDonald house. Seriously. Take some time to appreciate your wife and really let her open up with you. 80% of marriages from micro primis end in divorce. As a RN I left my last hospital after I had 2 13 yo prostitutes. One of them broke my heart when she told me she wasn't worried about being kidnapped because "her guys" had her number and she'd do whatever they wanted. |

Mom sold her into sex trades for drugs. She asked if she could ride with us to the hospital, “Lady, I don’t have the tolerance in me today to take you and your bullshit. Stay here” She got the message. |

No personal expierence but my sister is a registered nurse and head of the ER at a major hospital here in south florida. Shes told me plenty of stories of wacky shit she has seen over the years. A few come to mind.... Most of these stories are from when she was just an RN and not an administrator. These are second hand stories so if I don't get all the details perfectly right or something doesn't make sense then sue me! My sister saw a doctor was lancing a huge cyst on some guys back. Like the size of a lemon. He got it open and gently squeezed but nothing came out, so he squeezed harder and it burst and squirted him in the face and mouth/eyes up his nose. He ran out of the room spitting and puking his lunch up and my sister had to clean the guy up and get him prepared for another doctor to take over, who thankfully wore one of those clear face shields. She said it was one of the worst smells she ever did smell. And the stuff that came out of it was like cottage cheeze mixed with mayonnaise. She saw loads of homeless people, some who looked like they had not showered in years. Some of these people had bad injuries and were so filthy they had to clean them off before they could work on them. I don't know how much cleaning they had to do. Was it a full on shower/bath or just cleaning local areas with a sponge? She didn't say.... But she did say one dude had YEARS worth of crust and smegma and dried up semen built up all over his crotch area and pubes. A thick whiteish/yellow crust that was sort of welded to his crotch. Some poor nurse had to clean that shit off. I don't remember what ailment she said he was in the ER for. Another time she got a younger woman came into the ER with severe abdominal pains and stinky discharge from her vag. turns out that somehow the woman lost a tampon up her vag and forgot about it or some shit. None the less they ended up pulling out a dark green slimy tampon that was gelatinous in texture. that was her exact word, "gelatinous". they also had to clean up the infection and shit out of her vag and I think the woman made a full recovery. Plenty of stories about people eating their own shit and enjoying it. Throwing their own shit at nurses, that type of stuff. But I won't go into detail no one wants to hear about that. hmm what else.... oh yeah the maggot guy. so this guy comes in complaining of neck and back pain. Hes obviously a drug addict and looking for an RX. At this time, just to get rid of these people the hospital would prescribe a single RX of 8 or so hydrocodones. Just enough to get rid of the people. They don't dare do that now a days but this was many years ago... So anyways my sister notices the guy is talking funny and sucking on his teeth like you do when you have a piece of corn between your teeth. She also notices his teeth are pretty rotted out. She thinks maybe he has real pain after all and has him open his mouth to look. She sees holes in his gums under his teeth and literal maggots are living in the holes under his gums. I guess the dude had not brushed his teeth in years. She said as disgusting as it was he didnt complain of tooth pain so they didn't treat him for it but they did give him a referral to a local dentist that works on homeless folks for free. Quick link to some other random guy with maggots under his teeth Anyways these are all first hand accounts my sister directly witnessed and then told me. So I guess they are second hand accounts now. And I have more stories if any one is interested. Quite a few of people comming into the ER with unusual objects shoved up their asses, vaginas and even a couple of dick hole insertions. I don't know if those stories are CoC or not though. |

We had a couple cable guys that pulled cable for security systems working in the oldest part of the hospital. It was the old NICU, long before there were departments called NICU. It was basically the place they took babies that weren't going to make it so they could die as far away from the rest of the hospital as possible. Imagine an old hospital basement that got built over by the newer hospital, leaving a large room in a sub basement. The area around the rooms was dirt. The only access was through a hatch on either side of the room, no way to really get into the old room but there were ways to pass wiring through large conduit drilled in the walls. So the cable guys were down there and I got a call from one of them, upset as hell and he said there was no way they were ever going to pull cable through that space again. He sounded extremely shaken up. I went to where they were at and the two guys looked like they had lost most of their blood, pale and shaky. I mean, paler than usual, they were cable guys... Anyhoo... They said they were pulling cable through the room, one on each side. All of a sudden, the cables started jerking around violently. Cable was getting pulled through their hands and they were yelling at each other to knock it off, thinking the other guy was fucking with them. Then the shaking stopped. They both were mad at each other, but came to the conclusion neither had been pulling the cable. When they shined a light into the room, their cable was tangled into a giant ball. There is no way to get into those rooms. No doors or hatches or anything of the type. How did the cable get balled up like that? A lot of babies died in that forgotten room. Some are still there. I believe it with all my heart. |
