Want a fast wide angle lens, and I keep coming back to this one. Thinking it wld be good for crummy h.s. basketball lights under the hoop. I have a Tamron 24-70 G2 f/2.8, but want faster than 2.8.

| No. Only wide angle that's faster is the 24mm F1.4G that is multiples of the price of the 20mm F1.8G if bought new, ebay prices are much closer. There are wide angle DX zooms that are wider, but aren't as fast - I'm thinking of the AFP 10-20 f4.5-5.6 and AFS 12-24 F4 |

If you were shooting on a mirrorless camera, the options open up a good bit. There are a whole host of new Chinese lenses that are making a name for themselves from Sirui, Viltrox, Venus Optics Laowa. Venus Optics Laowa has a 25mm f/0.95 in Nikon Z mount. Yeah it's manual focus, but the things is damn bright. Only costs about $519. I have the 35mmf/0.95 for my Canon RF and it's one of my favorite lenses. The Sirui Sniper 16mm autofocus is f/1.2 and only $320. The Sirui Aurora 85mm autofocus f/1.4 is only $499. The Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 is $580. But again, they're all mirrorless mounts. I don't know if there is an adapter for Nikon mirrorless to Nikon DSLR, I doubt there is. Might be time to think about upgrading to a newer lens system. |

All of the R&D for new technology and new lenses is going into mirrorless technology. 10 years ago there were lenses manufactured by the OEM, and Tamron and Sigma. The Tamron and Sigma lenses were cheaper. but often times didn't look as good. today, the Sigma and Tamron lenses look just as good as the OEMs, maybe a bit heavier. But there are tons of new options from Chinese manufactures that are much cheaper and still look great. And are often doing things that the OEMs and Tamron and Sigma aren't doing. Stuff like tilt-shift, anamorphic, extreme low-light, and zoom ranges that aren't available other wise. A couple of years ago they were just manual focus. Now in the lat year or two we are starting to see autofocus lenses for Sony, Nikon, Fuji, and L-mount. (Canon's RF mount is still left out in the cold). It's been said here many times and I think it rings true in this case: you buy into a lens system, not the body system. If you are looking for a fast, wide prime, look at who's offering the lenses you want, and get the camera body for that system. And you are going to get the added benefits of better image processing, faster image processing, better and faster auto focus, tracking, and subject detection. Of course the trump tariffs are going to wreck havoc on the camera market since there's no cameras or lenses built in the US, and haven't been for about 20 years. (Except for Red cinema cameras). |

Yep, you can still buy dSLRs straight from the manufacturers, but I think that they're dumping their remaining inventories. All of the major manufacturers have, or are in the process of abandoning that tech. If you're a Nikon guy go grab a Z mount camera and an FTZ adapter to use your old dSLR lenses. Look for the models that use the Expeed 7 processor - Z50II, Z5II, Zfc, Z6III, Z8, or Z9. If you ever thought about jumping ship for a different manufacturer like Canon, or Sony, this would be the time to do it. |
