I've seen stories like this before from the Med. Those guys look pretty rough at the start of the video. They don't look like they rappelled down the fantail just in time for the camera.
Seems to be much more common than one might thimk. If an untrained seal can do it...

There is a bit of space in the rudder trunk and some have hatches that can be opened to access the ship. The hatches would be used to inspect the bearing or steering gear.

It used to happen quite often in the late 90's/early 2000's.
I pulled three Haitians and one Dom. Rep. out of a rudder compartment once...They had hitched a ride from Dom. Rep. to a U.S. port on the gulf coast - in the middle of winter. All they had on were T-shirts and underwear and were almost suffering from hypothermia.The only "luggage" they brought were some water bottles, a little food and several large rusty knives and hammers! I'm not Coast Guard...if you're wondering. |
