its so obvious that it makes me think there is no stopping it in Germany. If they haven't seen the reality yet, they aren't going to. Where does the AFD fall on the topic?  Is there real political change in Germany or is it hype?

The AfD continues winning elections and gaining share, but they will never come into any meaningful power. On the one hand, you could say that the AfD is very successful, having gained probably 35-40% of the vote. On the other hand, you have at LEAST as many people now voting for the hard left. Every political party has vowed never to enter into a coalition government with them, so unless they can get over 50% of the vote (which isn't going to happen anytime soon), nothing will change.

The AfD has some good ideas, but they are also very blind in some other areas.

[ETA] State election results from Saxony, where the AfD has done the best of all states:

The CDU (Republican lite) has vowed never to work with the AfD. Add in the Linke (the literal successor of the SED, the communist party of the former East Germany), the SPD, the Greens, and some BSW, and you get to a place where even in that state, the AfD can't pull off a ruling coalition.

[ETA2] Polling results for a federal election, which looks much worse for the AfD even if they're the strongest party overall.

SPD+Greens+Communists = 40%

Given the current situation, I'd run it 3K and pull a sample and have it analyzed, then change it based on when they say it needs changing.  If that be 5K or 10K, I'd do that.  Suddenly, investing in an oil analysis looks a lot better than just changing at an arbitrary mileage.

Edit to add: you cannot tell if an oil needs changing by looking at it.  "Dirty" looking oil may just mean that the detergents in the additive package are doing their job.  "Clean" looking oil could have a depleted additive package, excessive fuel dilution, or have been sheared below the minimum viscosity required.  Only an analysis can tell the tale.

On the other hand, silver sparkles in the oil mean BOTH the oil, and the engine, are done.

Do enlighten us.   And whilst so doing, please don't bring up the "ethnic Russians" who had been deliberately planted there back in Stalin's day to replace the native Ukrainians the Soviet Union deliberately starved to death.

We should really be using a decicated thread, so I'll put both of these in a new thread and link here.

To make your numbers a little bit more convoluted.

Right now, USGC to Asia is about $25 a barrel.

War premiums from Saudi Arabia to Asia is about $35 a barrel.

Add in another $20-30 a barrel for spot / same month delivery premiums.

Over all, you’re adding between $45 and $65 a barrel to your cost of crude.

Previously it was about $8-10 / bbl. And no one paid spot premiums unless they had an issue.

I mean, the world shares oil/distillates one way or another. Russia will source fuels from somewhere else and it will be deducted from our global inventory. Which right now it seems we are trying to supply what’s been shut down.

An unasked question.

Have any of you had a motor oil soaked rag combust on its own?   I have seen it happen with polymerizing oils like tung oil and linseed oil in the summer. I have a steel can in the garage for that reason .  But I have never seen a motor oil rag combust.

I've always been more concerned about spontaneous human combustion.  I remember that being a big problem when I was a kid in the 70's.

I put oily rags in the trash company's can.

What is the purpose of cotton shop rags over disposable HD paper towels?  Does anybody clean and reuse cotton shop rags?

I love a good double entendre.

Diesel question-  my GMC 3.0 duramax fuel filter housing had these red/gold/brown flakes in the bottom.  The fuel seems fine, truck is running normally.  The filter had about 20k miles on it.  About a teaspoon of water in the separator.  When I changed it last time, it looked exactly like that, with the same crud.

I wiped it out and it made sort of a brown smear on the rag, like it wasn’t solid material.

Probably rust/corrosion from the storage tank.  I doubt it would be from a newer vehicle's tank or fuel system.  If it is attracted to a magnet it could be wear metals but it is not algae/crud.

Edit: of course I could be completely wrong.

Looks like particulate to me.  very fine rust?  You been buying fuel from some low volume stop and rob?  Is it magnetic?   I doubt there is much rustable metal in that fuel system prior to the filter so if it's rust I don't think it's from your system.    Could be contaminated fuel.  Could be something growing but in my experience that only happens when things sit for a long time or are very contaminated.

Highest probability is dirty fuel from a lower volume station.  I don't think adding a treatment will hurt anything so try it for a few tanks but looks like tank sediment to me

We've seen that motor oils and fuels have shot up in price, but has anyone noticed a significant increase in things like garbage bags, nitrile gloves, and other everyday plastic items?  Aside from the expected increases from inflation, but attributable to oil scarcity.

I’ve haven’t been tracking those items, however early on Fox mentioned that items like plastics, resins, etc. will likely be affected. Some items like pex or poly plumbing materials have seen increases above normal over the past few months.

We generally keep a box or two of Costco sized garbage bags on hand anyway, so not super concerned there.

I did pick up a couple of extra boxes of nitrile gloves that I use out in the garage though.

ETA:

Just checked and the same gloves I bought in April for $9.99 per box are still $9.99 per box.

Ordered a couple more boxes, because every oil fort needs a glove fort too.

Politics aside, to me it seems the world makes X amount of distillates. For every refinery taken out it puts pressure on other refineries regardless of borders. Your choice if you’re ok with it or not.

Compostable plastics are often made from plant cellulose, corn starch, and biodegradable polymers and use no fossil based oil.

I put oily rags in the trash company's can.

What is the purpose of cotton shop rags over disposable HD paper towels?  Does anybody clean and reuse cotton shop rags?

I've worked at places that had shop rags through the uniform company that got turned in and washed, disposable cloth rags(cut up clothing) and disposable paper rags. They all have their upsides and downsides.

Do I have crud growing in my tank?  Will powerkleen fungicide fix it?

That stuff is all before the filter, so the filter is doing it's job (protecting the injection pump and injectors)

I personally wouldn't worry too much about it.

The plastic garbage bags and nitrile gloves I have in my house don't say that they're compostable or recyclable.  I'm pretty sure they're made from fossil oil, but I acknowledge there are bio-based plastics.

I like Foxtrot's plan for .mil refineries run like Army Ammunition Plants.   Offering excess product to the civilian population, being run by contractors.  It is a good solution.

I never want to see more government price controls, But the feds should step in to improve some infrastructure.   California has closed two refineries recently, P66 Wilmington / Carson, and Valero's Benicia facility.

There are a bunch of slimy lawyers that call themselves the "Sierra Club" that fight every development in the west.   We have no pipelines because the liberals fight them, applying  the Clean Water Act where it was never intended to be used.   The feds could absolutely use the commerce clause to make pipelines happen.  Burning diesel to drag gasoline to western AZ is insane.

CA tried to screw with the pipeline to Las Vegas in recent memory.  They were running "rolling blackouts" which shut down pumping stations.  There was a sudden lack of jet fuel at LAS.  Airlines were landing with nearly full tanks because of a fuel shortage at McCarren.  This is the kind of crap the feds should address.

Take any excess oil and put it back into the strategic petroleum reserve.
Liberals are a curious mix of communism and fascism, they want to destroy you but want to use your own money to do it.

I'm getting down to the last box, the others have all been destroyed...

However, it would seem that you could take any new cracked diesel, add die, and be ready to roll. You guys know a lot more than I do about this.

If I could screw Colorado out of their taxes, I would be thrilled!

Sounds like this is going to become a legal thing soon. How long could this prevent enforcement of offroad diesel in onroad trucks? It would take some while for the dye to go away, right? And not all trucks are driven all that much.

Yeah that’s going to make enforcement basically impossible for years to come if not longer.

Outlaw Country Woo!

Bright side to everything. Burning untaxed diesel with impunity makes me happy.
