Cat has CPI on these engines. All breaking in the same place, breaking #2 main cap bolt, and grenading the balancer. Sometimes they window the block. No fix for it yet though. Gotta get it out and see whats salavagable. |

After 9 months of frustration and tuning and I finally got the AC in working order for my 78 continental. The high side is still a little low on pressure than I want but I won't get true reads until next summer when it is 90f out again, It might always below anyway since I still have the original tube style Steel condenser. Getting all the old oil out of the system was a pain even with specialized cleaners. I don't think the ac system has not been working since the late 80s. Solidified mineral oil is a bitch and was the biggest annoyance |

I just finished updating my ‘91 from R-12 to R-134a so I can have AC again, just in time for winter Bit easier for me though, I replaced all components with new, with a ‘94+ condenser, and a custom liquid line as the adaptor.

Well, I got a 3 an hour raise and a, full pay, 40 hour guarantee. But it appears the economy is now s***, The entire quad cities has had massive downturn in work. I Wasn't in the industry during 2009, but this is very reminiscent of that according to the old-timers. I also contacted some of my old college buddies and it's the same deal where they are at, About the only thing consistent is Company contracts. S*** sucks, but not for me~~~ |

Do you have any techs in the Cat Global Dealer Technician Challenge. Started in August and the top 10 finalists will compete in the grand finals at ConExpo in Las Vegas. I know we have a guy doing it but there are more experienced and smarter techs who couldn't give a shit about it. we have been having a miserable time at work the last few weeks. Shutting down our old computer system (DBS) and changing to a new one, (NAXT). For a week we were dead with no system and then the new one turned on. Its been a shit show.

None that I know of. I don't even know how one would enroll. I found out through the grapevine that I was the only shop tech to make it and also scored in the top 3rd in the entire company. Round 2 is next Tuesday. I have no idea what we're going to be tested on. We're supposed to sunset DBS late this year/early next year. I'm just waiting for the ass pain to begin. I know we teamed up with NAXT last year, or maybe this year. I can't remember. |

We have been planning this swap over for a couple of years. I think it was poorly done. We have so many problems that should have been addressed before it went live. I know other dealers are using it so I assume they worked out the bugs. A big issue is every parts order goes to a supervisor for approval, they are not notified so you have to go and tell them, they stop what they are doing, log into your workorder and segment and approve it, multiple orders from multiple techs is causing a huge bottleneck. There has to be a way to turn it off but we haven't found a way yet. |

I can go all week without talking to my supervisor, now I'm in the office multiple times a day. Another crap design, all parts ordered on a segment get the same document number. trying to keep multiple orders separate is now impossible as back orders are all combined on the same document when they show up. There is also nowhere to add notes just to make it more frustrating. Hopefully these can be changed. We were told Carter Cat tried NAXT for a few months and then went back to DBS. I did get price and availability turned on in SIS to make my job a little easier. |

I can look tomorrow. if you click parts and availability and it pops up not available then it needs turned on. If it pops up with a place for a customers number then either put in the one you are working with or I have been using a generic one. |

We get a few new service trucks every year, normally KW or Pete's, occasionally FL. We just got our first Western star. They made this choice because the dealer is just down the road and dealing with the others requires an hour drive to get to their shops. Don't know much about WS but it looks pretty nice. It's set up as a welding service truck. It has a platform behind the cab for the diesel Miller and it has a 12K, 30ft crane.

I think that's all of them when it comes to emissions. When we used to lease them, we got cheap trucks, cheap body's and cheap cranes. Now that we buy our own trucks we get better quality. Most have 12K or 14K cranes, hydraulic air compressors and generators. |

The black Fords we had/have (still have several limping along) were constantly having issues. When we switched over to white trucks, they were all Petes and KWs, and we haven't had any issues out of them, but someone up higher is tightening the purse strings, and we've been buying FLs. Even with the best beds, cranes, and welders, it's still gonna be a FL under there, and they're gonna age crazy fast. |

| On a more fun note: I have a D8R that came in for undercarriage. All of the minor bogies are slopped out, plus some other stuff. The quote I sent them was about 105k. I got told to hold on, and now they might be doing a rebuild. It was rebuilt at 8k hours, and it's knocking on 8k again. Apparently, they were in talks with their rep about getting a rebuild quote before it came in. |

This is the one the customer tore the engine and trans out of, fired their mechanic and then it sat for 18 months before coming in for a rebuild. Its a bit of a shit show with things that are missing, damaged or rusty due to sitting open for so long. They even managed to lose all the hydraulic pumps.
