When you figure out which readers you need, get a pair of ThinOptics Keychain or credit card (available on Amazon). Great for unexpected needs, like reading menus in dim restaurants, or being able to SEE the stupid splinter to grab it with the tweezers (something that using enlarge on the phone, doesn't work well for).

Used the tweezers in my SAK many times over the years. The first time I had to try and get a splinter out of her foot, and couldn't see the damned splinter, was

I’m opposite, not sure which is worse.

I can see things within 3’ clear but beyond that I need glasses or everything is blurry.

I can get laser surgery to fix it, but I’m too chicken shit to have a laser pointed into my eyes by someone I don’t know.

I've had the same thing happen to me. My detached retinas come from multiple explosions and TBIs. No lens replacement yet, but it's gonna happen soon. I've had two detached retinas and multiple surgeries to fix them. Now I have a shitload of floaters from the debris left over from the surgeries. I can't see shit in low light and up close. The floaters interfere with my vision really bad. My opthamologist has me scheduled to have vitrectomy in December to remove the fluid and floaters in my left eye and replaced with saline. While he's in there, he's gonna do more laser stitching to reinforce my retina. Then in March 2024 for the right eye. He said I'm guranteed to get cataracts from the procedures. I'll get my lenses replaced in 2025. After that I should be good to go. I'll have my left eye done for close up and my right eye for distance.

@wjoutlaw

Who is doing your vitrectomies?

I had mine done in Dallas by a Plano doctor.

I came down with Iritis last week. This is fun I'd never heard of it.
And I need Cataract surgery too.

I'm having them done in San Antonio by the Retina Specialists

I'm 46 and can't see anything with detail at more than 75 or so yards. It's probably glasses time for me.

53 and mildly nearsitred since my teens.   -1.75 correction.   Wear multi focal contacts for presbyopia.  Mostly works out OK.   With contacts I still can't read inside 8-10" and carry readers around.   With glasses I have some type of coating that acts like a reader.  Can't remember the name.  Usually just take glasses off to read up close.

I do try to spend the first hour of each day not wearing glasses or contact at all to force my eyes to work naturally.

Have you been checked for cataracts or macular degeneration yet?

A trip to the retinal specialist may be in order.

No need for retina at this point. Loss of focusing at near is called presbyopia and everyone gets it. Always good to get a yearly exam but doesn’t need to be from a sub-speciality like retina s they won’t prescribe any type of correction. Options are typically glasses and in some cases contact lenses. Surgical not a good idea if that’s the only problem. OP just needs to make an appointment with their local Optometrist or general Ophthalmologist

Yeah.

I do a lot of work out in the shop at focal lengths from anything from 3 inches to 10 feet.  I'm constantly taking reading glasses on and off.

Had to get me one a' them old lady string thingies so I could hang them around my neck.

So now it's not a problem anymore because I spend all my free time walking back and forth between the shop and the house to get the glasses I forgot were around my neck and took off in the house.

I wear these in my shop.  Look closely, they have little bifocal/magnifiers on the lower section only, not the whole glass area.  I buy them by the dozen 'cause I'm always losing them.

I'm not even 50 yet and I can't see a goddamned thing up close.
Aspirin bottles and anything with small print are my bane. If your want to defeat me throw a small thing I need to read at me in low light and I'm done for.
I need a fucking flood light to have a chance to see small print and hold the thing at arms length. I've resorted to taking pictures of small things and blowing them up on my phone screen.

Besides bifocals and reading glasses is there anything that can be done to improve things?
Anything that worked for you guys?

1.  Your phone is a phone.  Use you pc (17" or larger screen) for email and web.
2.  Magnifying glass to read labels, like a private eye. (Nero Wolfe, Italy version)

I'm 50 this year, and can barely read my phone.
It started about 5 years ago, and seems to progress faster.

I have terrible far vision, and my optometrist told me that my strong correction in my contacts makes it that much harder (almost impossible) for my eyes to correct for my close vision as I age.
I really hate it.

Yeah, welcome to the party, Pal.

I'm lucky, though. My eye doctor's husband is a shooter, too, so she knows EXACTLY what I'm talking about
regarding my needs (sight's gotta be in focus, yo.)

That hit me at age 42.  It was sudden and dramatic.

I had already quit contact lenses due to dry eye.  I've worn glasses since age 9.  When I got Presbyopia I tried progressive bifocals, and had no trouble getting used to them.

YMMV.

If you don't wear glasses, try some inexpensive readers.  Figure out what strength works best for you, and keep pairs of them all over your house, wherever you might need to read something.  Kitchen, bathroom, office, reloading bench, garage, etc.

The sudden and dramatic part is so very true. I was about 45 when it hit me and it seemed like it was an overnight thing. I had been in Ireland for a few days when suddenly I couldn't read the road map. Next village with a store I stopped and bought a pair of readers, the weakest strength was enough at the time.

The Valium helps considerably...

Find a LASIK guy who does a TON of them.  The more assembly line, the better.  And make sure you're not someone who keloids easily.

It's a very user-friendly surgery though.  I noticed an immediate change in my visual acuity, and was feeling well enough to drive long distances after about 8 hours.

Oh you are gonna love your 60’s OP.??

My granddaughter is my official detent and small part finder. I spent an hour trying to find a tiny part…she walked into garage and saw it right away.

I need to update my bifocals.

Preach it, brother. 45 here. A few years back it was like overnight my vision just went to complete shit. I can drive and see at distance fine (not great), but up close my eyes are useless without readers, and I absolutely hate wearing glasses on my head. I actually sunk into a pretty deep depression when it first hit. Also had cataract surgery in both eyes already. Getting old sucks.

Blessedly near-sighted here, too.  And as I'm getting older, my prescription is getting weaker, meaning my eyes are getting better.

I talked to my doc about laser surgery, but she told me I'd probably have good vision for a year or two, then I'd probably need reading glasses.  No thanks.  I'll stand pat with what I've got.

Handy for my job, too, sometimes I need to look closely at small parts.

Yeah I routinely take off my glasses and have to remind myself a "Safety Squint" isn't much protection from a grinder.
Then I need my glasses to find my glasses.

Been way past readers for quite awhile.

One eye I need cataracts removed as it is affecting my eye more. Tried to have it removed before covid but the eye doctors said wasn't bad enough.

My prescription actually went down when I turned 60.  Have reading glasses in every vehicle, tractor, shop, place I sit, they are cheap.  Be glad you can still see distance.  Get away from iron sights!  Scopes and holosuns for me.
