I'm buying hunks of plastic, and I want a longer slide for competition... (If the day come that primers are flowing again

and I can compete)
I never handled a 17 and a 34 at the same time, and I would like to built my tiny hand daughter the same pew-pew... I think the 34 looks odd, but is it worth it?

Would my 4'9" daughter have issues drawing a 34 out of a hostler?

The only advantage the 34 has is the extra sight radius. It is more susceptible to limp wristing and it takes longer to draw and point. Unless you need that extra sight radius, the 17, or even the 19 is a better option.

I don’t think size of the shooter will necessarily be an issue but she’ll need a good, firm stance with the 34. When I was shooting IDPA, one of the female shooters was smaller statured and started with her carry gun, a Glock 26. She had a long grueling haul to get better and just when she was making good progress she bought a Glock 34 to “help” her and immediately dropped way back in scores.

My wife shoots my 17L just fine. Get whichever one you like.

If you’re going to run a rds get a G45 MOS and call it a day.

34 slide is the same weight as the 17 and reliability has always been really good with them.

I like both.

I've owned both, 34 is a known competition gun. I notice the slide dwell on the 34.

17 is my preferred, shoot it the same and I can carry it if need be.

I shoot the 17 better than a 19.

The only difference is the 34 is about 3/4" longer at the front of the slide. Everything up to that point is exactly the same.

Drawing in competition is more about technique than gun size. And she can use a drop/offset holster, which drops the entire holster a couple inches below the belt, so the back of the slide is about level with the top of the belt.

You can always buy a 17 and a 34 slide since they're on the same frame. Tons of aftermarket 34 slides but I'd assume there are fewer 17 competition options.

I’ve got both, I’d get both. I voted for the 17, as alone it’s perfect. The 34 is not needed for most applications, but the longer sight radius is better in my view

This. With a RDS the length of slide is irrelevant unless you really want the weight out front. Add a tungsten guide rod and you have the same feeling with a much shorter barrel that's faster on target and out of the holster.

My dept issues Glock 35s and several of our shorter female officers have begun using drop holsters because they had trouble drawing the longer guns due to torso length. That said, I do like the way the long slides shoot. The 17 is a fine shooter too.

34 is 1911 length, and pairs perfectly with a WML. Its also a bit smoother and has a bit higher velocity. Basically theres no reason not to get the 34 vs the 17.

17mos with an SRO 2.5.

This coming from someone that shoots a 34mos in competition.

Might buy a 45mos here soon to replace it.

I have had both 17s and 34s. Just going on price I would get a 17. The 34 Is nice but too long for some applications. If only for competition and you don’t mind paying more go for the 34.

I would first decide which Division you and your daughter will be competing in.

Then based on that, narrow your choices.

FYI, the 17L will automatically put you in Open, and being 9mm will shoot minor.

The 34 and 17 will have several potential Divisions...Limited, Limited-10, Production, Carry Optics, maybe others.

ETA: I shoot the 34 (with irons) in Production. I have a 17 w/optic for Carry Optic, but haven't competed with it yet, as I just got the pistol when the world went to shit. Someday...

My daughter and myself shoot SSP...

We would train with the new guns first ,and then go from there...

The long slide guns may never see competition...

I just want them, my daughter lit up when she heard I was buying new guns and was fishing to find out if one was hers. But she's probably just a spoiled parasitic drain that wants more stuff

I didn't answer her, she maybe the 2nd most expensive thing in my life... I'm not bitter, its just the principal...

Stay away from the gen 4 34. Either get a 3 or a 5. The gen 4’s are pretty famous for sending the brass back at your face.

I'm a big big fan of my 34, however it is slower to draw than my 19s.

Given your daughter's height I'd say stick with the 19. Nothing wrong with a good 19, it's faster to draw (more holster options for sure), and if you put an optic on it you've negated the longer sight radius of the 34.

I voted 34 but you could get either and then a spare 17 slide or vice versa. So in Arfcom fashion that means 'get both'.

I have both and carry both but recently I've been using my 17 Gen 5 more than my 34 Gen 3.

Get both. I have a real Glock 34 in a chassis with an SRO on it and that thing is compact and pretty damned accurate out to about 100 yards. I made a P80 17 and a P80 19 and both work great but I think I like the 17 more. Bottom line, get both.

I have both.

34 MOS is the first Glock I ever won in GSSF. Put a leupold DPP on top for kicks. Fine gun.

My 17 is an early Gen 4 and is easy to shoot well.

I wouldn't use the G48 for competition.

First, those Shield mags are at least twice as much as factory G17 mags, and you'll need at least 4, but most would get 7-10 to have backups.

Second, there is not nearly the same amount of aftermarket support for the G48 as there is for the G17/34, especially Gen 3. Important when one starts changing factory parts for competition parts or want competition holsters.

The G17L is not legal for IDPA.

It is Open minor in USPSA, competing against purpose built 1911 and CZ based race guns shooting Major.

It won't fit in "The Box." The G34/35 were created to fit in the box.

You mention competition. The 34 was designed for competition. It’d be more clear cut if it were heavier or if optics didn’t exist, but I would still try not to overthink this. If I’m going down to a 17, these days I’d just as soon go down to a 19 (43X w/ shield mags), which shifts it more to carry over competition anyway.

I prefer the Glock 34 over the 17. I have a 17 slide that I can put on the frame instead. It does not conceal any different. My 34 is a soft shooting tack driver. That being said, if you went 17, it is not a super big difference in performance.
