Heck of A Man.
Had to 'weasel' his way in to the Army Air Corp due to being underweight, no pun intended.
Also flew on a combat mission in Vietnam.
He was along as an 'official observer' but was qualified to pilot a B-52.

B-17G Fortress “Liquid-8-Or” of 569th Bomb Squadron dropping cases of “10 in 1” rations into Holland during Operation Chowhound aimed at breaking the famine in western Holland, May 3 1945.

Leichter Radschlepper Laffly W15T Gepanzerte Ausführung, a 251 hull attached to a French Laffly truck chassis. Possibly only two of these conversions were done in France by Baukommando Becker in 1943

The Tank Museum has the last surviving Boarhound. It was designed by General Motors to meet British requirements for a heavy vehicle suitable for desert conditions in 1942. Completed too late for use in the North African campaign, it was seen as impractical for use in Europe.

3rd Infantry BAR men didn't have a particularly great life span as they fought up through Southern France into Germany.  My guess is PFC Knappenberger's BAR needed a good cleaning from laying down a lot of fire.

It is beyond my reasoning capabilities that after fighting so fiercely, bravely and valiantly to be grievously wounded knowing that the War that you fought in for years was coming to an end very soon  and you're anticipating returning home to the 'Good Old USA' and knowing that you'll soon be dead.

A Mitsubishi G4M carrying Japanese envoys and covered in safe passage markings lands at the US base on Iejima, 19 August 1945

"On 19 August 1945, two B-25Js of the 345th Bombardment Group and 80th Fighter Squadron P-38 Lightnings escorted two Japanese Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" bombers. The Japanese aircraft carried a delegation from Tokyo en route to Manila to meet General MacArthur's staff to work out details of the surrender.

The Betty bombers were painted white with green crosses on the wings, fuselage and vertical tail surface and use the call signs Bataan I and Bataan II. After the delegation landed at Ie Shima, they boarded a C-54 Skymaster and were flown to Manila. After the meeting, they returned to Ie Shima. One of the two Bettys crashed on its way back to Japan out of fuel, due to an incorrect conversion of liters to gallons when the bombers were refueled. The crew were helped by a local fisherman, and returned to Tokyo by train."

It was so shitty, made of a vey soft steel that only 10k were made and by 1940 even if the Irish were hating the UK they were using british MKII helmets.
More than 4k were discarded to built a barrack of the Irish army so they are now quite scarce.

The Marmon-Herrington THD-315-6 with articulated omnibus trailer, used by the RAF for the 1,300-mile duty cross-desert transport run between Habbaniyah, Iraq, and Damascus, Syria. In 1932, two "Desert Pullman" bus conversions of the THD-315-6, originally an oilfield pipe carrier, were bought by the Nairn Transport Co. to run between Baghdad and Damascus. One of the vehicles was taken over by the RAF in 1943 and is seen here at Habbaniyah, compared in size with a Hillman Minx staff saloon car. Known as the "Monster Bus" in RAF service it carried 44 passengers and their luggage, was fully air-conditioned and was equipped with a kitchen, lavatory and iced-water on tap.

More oilers so I'm not freeloading as usual. Bringing go juice to the fleet.
