The US did just about everything you could imagine to train gunners for bombers.  Shooting clays with shotguns you probably know about.  Here's some more.

Instructional cartoon:
Hitting a Moving Target for World War 2 Bomber Gunners (1944 - Restored)

Ground and midair firing at towed windsock:

Jam Handy trainer.  Projectors showed an attacking fighter and the correct aim point, simulator gun projects a light beam when trigger depressed:

Waller simulator.  Four gunners at a time fire at projected fighters on the interior of a half dome.  A light sensor detects hits and triggers a buzzer, the machine would record the number of shots fired and the number of hits from each gunner:

In the Waller's guts were 9 projectors, 5 to project film of fighters and 4 that registered hits:

Of course nothing beats shooting real fighters with real bullets, so they did that too.  When Bell developed a dedicated ground attack follow on to their P-39 Airacobra, the P-63 Kingcobra, the USAAF passed on it but the Soviets, primary user of the P-39, were enthusiastic and ordered them in large numbers.  A veteran Soviet combat pilot and an engineer came to Bell and the production aircraft was tweaked to meet Soviet needs, including more armor.  At the same time the USAAF decided to develop a gunnery training program called Operation Pinball involving shooting at a real fighter, and they ordered some P-63's to be stripped of guns, modified with an additional ton of armor, and equipped with lights in the nose and wings attached to sensors that detected bullet impacts.  Gunners would fire frangible ammunition with bullets made from a combination of soft powdered lead and bakelite plastic at the fighters as they made mock firing passes on bombers, hits triggered the lights.  A handful of fighters were shot down by lucky radiator penetrations, but the training was done over flat desert so most damaged aircraft were landed without incident.

300 RP-63 armored target planes were built:

T-44 (later redesignated M22) frangible .30:

Thanks.  I wasn't aware of Pinball and frangible bullets in WW2.

Like others have replied, never knew about the frangible ammo training program, Thanks.

I did not realize how few of them there were, and basically every Me-210 was gutted and put into the 410's.

The Me-210 ruined Willy Messerschmitt.

That is another interesting plane, but it too was late to the game. Really amazing how far air warfare changed in WW2.

Captain Alexander Marinesko of Soviet submarine S-13.  Marinesko was ejected from the Communist Party for alcoholism, nearly court martialed for desertion after disappearing for a few days with a Finnish woman, caught lying about his kill claims, and was looking forward to a court martial for alcoholism when he got back from patrol:

S-13:

The Kriegsmarine evacuated 2 million Germans from Courland and East Prussia in Operation Hannibal after the Soviets cut off the region. Marinesko sunk the liner Wilhelm Gustloff on 30 January 1945 killing an estimated 9,400 people, the greatest single maritime disaster in history.  She was armed, not marked as a hospital ship, and some of the passengers were healthy soldiers being redeployed, so she was fair game.

10 February 1945 Marinesko sank SS General von Steuben, also an armed transport carrying a mix of soldiers and refugees.  About 4,000 killed:

Although the most successful Soviet submarine commander of the war, even for Russia Marinesko was too drunk and surly to be a Hero of the Soviet Union and was awarded the lesser Order of the Red Banner instead.  Insulted, Marinesko ordered S-13 to dive when staff officers tried to board her for the presentation.  On his next patrol he stayed perma-drunk and S-13 failed to engage the enemy.  Marinesko was downgraded in rank to lieutenant and dishonorably discharged in October 1945.

Yikes! He must have been A Super Alky to have been court martialed, considering how the Russians are known for their vodka consumption.

Did you happen to hear last night from a far away land, a angry man cussing?

If you did that was me trying to put the painting masks on my 1/72nd BF 110 model.

Ha, man those 1/72 are very difficult. I get cross eyed.

1/48 is small as I like to go, but some versions you just gotta get what you can.

I think it is going to look really nice with those decals you got.

Pulled box out today I forgot about while organizing a truckload of gun stuff to a consign to a local auction house.
The box is full of "older" 1/72 scale airplane models. (20-30)  They came to me at another auction.  Wanted the 1/6 scale Kettenkrad that was part of the lot.
Models have been removed from their boxes and put in plastic bags, but appear complete with instructions.

I want to be careful and not cross any lines.
If you are a model builder and have posted in THIS thread, I will send you a few for the cost of postage.
Just send me a PM.    Five models to each person seem fair?

Just be aware, all day tomorrow, (Sat) I will be away from my computer, so first in line gets their choice.
If I did cross any lines, let me know and I will delete this post.

It is crazy how much those gauges go for.

Seemed like the field was both wet and bumpy and a few guys got off the ground a little too early.   That guy at 11 minutes unfortunately stalled the left wing right away.   Lucky he settled down on the gear and didn't cartwheel.

@13starsinax

What variant are those Bf-110s?

@Dog1
You don’t need to go to such measures.   Decals are available

Also in 1/72 and 1/48 it looks like.  By Peddinghaus.  I knew they made WWII armor decals

Looks like he torque-rolled. not enough opposite rudder? (I'm just a crew Chief)
