View Quote What’s the penalty for valuing your life over their stupid laws? Can’t you just conceal a handgun there instead of visibly carrying a shotgun or rifle, who would know, isn’t it out in the middle of nowhere? Didn’t a hunter in Canada a few years ago kill a bear with a handgun he was packing, I think a Sig .45, and from what people said that’s a big no no there? Whatever happened to him? |

The nice thing about tagging killer bears is that is much easier to find the bodies of it's victims.

They had a warning sign
The area. The Red Deer River Valley Lisa Dahlseide, a conservation biologist, said, “Their attacks are extremely unusual. They do not happen very often at all. “This time of year when they’re eating, they’re trying to fatten up. “That food is so critical, preparing for hibernation. They might’ve felt their food source was being threatened, even if it wasn’t.” Merle Fox, a trail guide and owner of Sunset Guiding and Outfitters, said food sources for bears are a lot less this year compared to previous years. According to Fox, bears typically rely on berries throughout the fall. “There are no berries for them … They’re probably going for other things like deer, young elk, a lot of wild horses,” she told Global News. “They are just trying to find whatever they can eat right now. It’s the time of the year when they fill up and they are eating whatever they can eat. “People need to be on guard now.” Link |

Was there 08/2014. Bears were like stray cats iirc. So many of them. Sucks.

Quoted: I'm curious, to those who live in Grizzly country, are they as hated as wolves are to ranchers? Are there protections if you shoot a grizzly that's attacking your livestock? Having no experience with anything beyond black bears, I just assume grizzlies are assholes and everyone hates them. Every time a grizzly thread comes up, I worry about my younger brother who goes elk hunting alone in Montana. I always send him the link to the thread and remind him to stay proficient with his 10mm Glock!
Thanks for the reminder. |

People hiking (not hunting) with long guns strapped over their shoulders? Fuck that shit. That's for war zones, not hikes. I have lots of slugs for my 12 gauge, but it would strictly be for car camping. No point in it when I can have a handgun on me at all times. Serious question, how long ago did Canada lose its mind over handguns? |

I like nature and all that, but grizzlies tend to make me understand why the early settlers dealt with them harshly.
Now they want to reintroduce them to WA state. Nah- we are doing fine with plenty of the little ones thanks. Don’t need a giant man eating predator that can run as fast as a car…. The video of the one going after the boat was interesting. Good thing they were were moving quick or it might have actually ripped someone off the boat. I would have fucking loaded up, snuck back downriver slowly, and plugged him just for trying… |

JRE has talked about the bears in Canada. Apparently a huge problem, Canadian govt says screw you to the people in bear country. Bear population is out of control and starting to meet the Canadian population, and I guess the Canadian govt has zero interest in controlling the bear population.

View Quote Grizzlies generally don't eat people, or kill/maul them without feeling threatened. But once in a while... We had a case years ago where a guy was sleeping in his tent (in a campground where others were camping) and a sow ripped into his tent, dragged him out, and killed him. She had her two cubs with her. FWP found her, euthanized her, and her cubs were sent to a zoo. Thankfully that's an exception with bear encounters. Griz don't eat people unless they're messed-up in the head. Black bears are the ones known to eat people, but I'm skeptical that it happens very often. Long before that I began sleeping with a .44mag and a flashlight under my pillow. Another thing that I ALWAYS do when tent camping is to pitch my tent in a group of trees (which helps with rain runoff as well). I then grab my 50 yard spool of camo paracord and run it around the perimeter of said trees at thigh-level, and then clip a bell in the middle of the line 5between each set of trees. I do that even when my wife and our Akita are with me, but especially when solo camping. I sleep very light, so a jingle would get my immediate attention. I figure that my security precautions are good for both two-legged and four-legged predators. Or maybe even just keep a moose from tiptoeing through my site (had a cow and two calf moose wander through my site many years ago). |

We got to talking about hunting in general and he tells me about hunting deer on Kodiak Island back in the day. The above is the father. |
