| I just bought a vertical wall mounted gun rack made of pine. It is unfinished. I would like to make it look like rustic like something you would see in an old time cabin. The problem is I don't know much about stains. What is a good rustic looking color. The wall it's going on is medium brown also I will be using a tru-oil finish. I hope this is the right forum for this and thanks for the help. |

If I were you, and didn't know what I wanted - I'd get on the internet and take a look at stain color charts to find a few colors that you might like. Then, I'd go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a cheap piece of 1x4 pine and two or three small cans of likely stains and apply them to the cheap pine to see which one actually looks the best to you. Personally, I wouldn't want a very dark stain - but I'd look to see if I could find a lighter mahogany. Mahogany is a very typical antique wood. |

I'm a big fan of using iron acetate for an aged or old wood appearance. If you're not familiar with it, it is something you can make yourself by dissolving steel wool in vinegar for a few days. It causes a chemical reaction with the tannins in the wood which cause them to turn dark. Unfortunately, pine has very little tannin in it, but you can add it to the wood by making a very strong batch of coffee and coating the wood with it first and allow it to dry. Once the coffee has dried just brush on the iron acetate and then wait a few minutes for the reaction to take place. |
