In Dublin for a couple days at the start of a vacation, meeting up with our daughters and hanging out. We were doing some shopping and my wife, while she’s eyeing something at another store, says “there’s a Rolex dealer across the street if you want to go look over there”. So I take one of the girls and we walk over. Found the dealer and asked to see the 40mm Explorer. He pulls it out of the case, we go sit down, try it on, etc. At the end of that I say “I don’t suppose you have one available today, right?” He says “Well, let’s see…”, taps on his computer for a second, and says “Actually, yes. We have one that was released for sale less than 10 minutes ago.” So I boogie back to the wife, tell her they actually have one available, and she says “okay, let’s go” and all five of us head back over. I find the sales guy, give him the thumbs-up, and 10 minutes later they’ve got 5 glasses of Moët for us while he’s doing the paperwork. We get it sized, he winds it a bit, and off we go. Best part was that because of the VAT refund, it came out about $1,100 cheaper than if I’d bought one in Texas with the sales tax. Definitely a great surprise - I was planning on going to the AD in Lugano later in the trip but I can skip that now.

[Literally:] 🥂 That’s great! If I wanted to put down Rolex money, that one would be my choice - pretty much a do-all watch, as far as I’m concerned. A no-date Submariner would be a close second, for today, at least.  Like others have already said, wear it in good health!

Thanks, all. I’m still pretty excited every time I check the time. I’m not a big fan of the “Here’s my watch with my pistol” or “Here’s my watch and a cigar at the range” pics, but I couldn’t pass up the “here’s my watch and a glass of prosecco on a private boat tour with my wife on our 15th wedding anniversary on Lake Como” pic.

Other than the Explorer I got, they only had two other Rolexes available for purchase - both of the gold & diamond variety and much more expensive. Not sure why mine flipped to "available" when it did but I was just in the right place at the right time. |

I packed mine in my backpack on the way back expecting to be asked to declare. Agent didn’t even ask. Didn’t feel bad since I didn’t have to lie. |
