I'm in the market for a car, and I've had my eye on an RDX for a while now. My budget appears to be able to get me into a 20-22 AWD model with decently low miles. ($35,000 range)

I like the looks of the A-Spec, but it's not a requirement. I think the seat coolers would be a nice feature.

Let me know what you think about them, especially about the performance, handling, reliability, and any known issues.

Any additional info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I used to have a 2022 Aspec Advance.

Pro:

-very quiet
-ELS sound system
-SHAWD
-adjustable suspension
-Good quality material inside

Con:

-Slow
-Poor mpg
-Horrific fit and finish inside and out
-Maintenance is expensive-ish. It's not just a Honda CRV. You have valve adjustments at 105k, transmission fluid every 30-40k, differential fluid every 10-15k, etc etc etc.

Unresolved issues:

-Engine goes into limp mode if you floor it in the rain. Yes, even mine with the new intercooler did it.
-Rear windows shatter near the wiper blade. No fix. Tint it! At least then it won't fall into the lift gate and forever clank.
-Sunroof popping is still an issue for some, although mine was solid.

Wife has one. Overall it’s nice and I like it. Mileage is disappointing. Too much tech for me, but good in the snow. Love the heated and ventilated seats.

Thanks, I'll take all that into consideration and check for popping noises during test drives. It looks like the rear window breakage only affects certain VIN ranges thru 2020 so I can watch for that. Not sure how I can check for the rain limp mode issue.

What aspects of the fit and finish did you not like?

I'm not too concerned about maintenance costs. I was a tech for almost 20 years and still work for the same company so I get all my parts at cost and also get heavily discounted labor if it's something I don't feel like doing myself.

Seems like a lot of the 4 cyl turbos in this category don't do that well for mileage. Glad to hear it's good in snow. Definitely getting an SH-AWD model.

I have a 2020 RDX A-SPEC SH-AWD and really have no complaints.  The mileage is disappointing (25ish mpg) coming from a Honda Accord (35ish mpg) but is to be expected from a heavier, AWD vehicle.  No major maintenance, no issues with windows randomly shattering.  The infotainment system interface takes some getting used to but not a deal-breaker. Heated/Vented seats are great.  Mine was built in Canadia so I've got a heated steering wheel and wiper heaters that are pretty great when things get frigid.  Overall, I'd buy it again.

Fyi. That’s the exact same maint requirements of every Honda including the crv.  Excluding the generation v6 which does not have valance adjustments. They went hydraulic.

I think I found the one I want. 2021 lease return A-Spec AWD with 35000 miles. White with black/grey interior. The dealership it's at is an hour away, so I can't go until Saturday, but if it's still available, I will probably bring it home pending the test drive.

Wish me luck!

Nah, the windows break on all new gens. Acura just doesn't acknowledge it official.

The popping can take time to develop as the sunroof hardware loosens. Also, temp delta can affect it.

Just understand that on humid drizzly days where you spend a lot of time at low boost say, cruising freeway, if you floor it, it may well lose nearly all power and go into limp mode. Pull over, shut it off, restart it.

The body panel gaps left to ride side were all different, and on every rdx nearly, the rear gate is warped. You can compare the gap on the bottom right and left corners of the lift gate and see this. Bet every one on the lot varies.

Vouch for snow. SHawd is as close to as my EV as I've found yet. Amazing system.

The CRV doesn't need different fluid every 7500-15k miles. Otherwise, similar, but that's $100-200/every 2 oil changes.

Had a 2020 for the wife.

It was a good looking ride, relatively quick, awd. I thought that the interior fit and finish was good.

But at 30k the transmission stopped transmissioning when it got hot, and wouldn’t go into reverse. Acura had never seen the issue before, and sent the trans back to Japan for analysis. The dealer (who was out of state, it happened to me on vac and left me stranded) was extremely helpful in getting it replaced.

The car was never right after that. The car started throwing “transmission overheating” codes on the highway if you did extended driving over 65mph. I had it in multiple times, fought with everyone in Acura as high up as I could go.

I got rid of it. Bummer.

It was made in Georgia. Interesting they'd send it back to Japan without knowing what was wrong.

Hondas maint minder calls for rear diff fluid every 15k miles until 60 k then 30k after that.  Has been this way on all dual pump rear diffs for nearly a decade.

And the post I quoted didn’t say 7500.

You’ll have outliers every now and then.  Had a 24 pilot today with 5k miles calling for it.

I like this color combination, too.  The seats are also black and grey which I really wanted. It seems like 75% of the A-Spec models have red seats. I'm not a fan of red interiors.

If I could have gotten a red & black exterior, though... Those are sexy as hell! Seems like a pretty rare color, though. I only saw one in for sale in the last few months and it was in Texas.
