Uncle Sam is sending me to a a school for a week in Memphis.
I will actually be staying in Southaven, MS about 7 miles from the Memphis airport. Where are the good places to eat? All types of food welcome! Thanks for any suggestions. |

The steak n’ shake in Southaven is definitely a must. Plenty of parking and local shopping like a super Walmart and staples. There’s even a Lowe’s across the street!

I liked Corky's and Rendezvous. There is or was a great 2 or 3 location soul food restaurant on the south side of town that was really good but the name escapes me.

The Mesquite Chop House is excellent, but a little pricy.
ETA: The one in Southaven. |

My favorite Mphs style BBQ is Memphis BBQ company which is located in MS very close to where you are staying. You
must try the pork ribs “dry”. They are fall off the bone tender and the flavor is so good you don’t need sauce. I took my family there last week even though I have to drive by several other BBQ places to get there. |

You are entering a third world country. Assume everyone is going to rob you at best. Stay alert and well armed.
I dare you to look under your bed when you check in. |

If I had to be in Memphis for a week and was staying in Southaven, I would not venture into Memphis unless I absolutely had to.
Like for work related activities and I'd be armed to the teeth when there. I was born there, lived there, spent a lot of time there over the years. Any food worth eating in Memphis is not worth venturing into Memphis for. |

Flight, Coastal Fish, Porch and Parlour, Southern Social are all owned by the same people. We've eaten at them all, and all were excellent.
However, if you want REAL Memphis food, but not BBQ, the best is Pete and Sam's. Of course, you can still get BBQ, like a BBQ pizza, but everything there is really good, and it's more or less the same "shabby chic" place that it was 50-60 years ago. My family drives to Memphis about every 4-5 weeks (an hour each way) specifically to eat there. Featured on the Food Network's "Best thing I ever ate" The Best Thing I Ever Ate... Edited to add, there was a "locally famous" guy in the BBQ scene in Memphis named John Wills. He won the World Championship BBQ contest in Memphis a couple of times back in the 80's. Anyhow, John retired to a little town in Arkansas, and opened a little restaurant there. His spaghetti sauce closely resembles Pete and Sam's spaghetti sauce. Last time I was in Pete and Sam's, I mentioned that to one of the owners. Apparently John Wills and Mr Sam were big buddies, and so Mr Sam's sons weren't surprised at all that John's meat sauce was a close match to theirs, and then they added "You probably outta know that our BBQ taste's a lot like John's as well", which made perfect sense as to why it was so good. |

In Southaven try
https://avellinos.net/ Pretty good local place. I also like rum boogie down on Beal street if you make it that far into the city. Central BBQ, Germantown Commissary, and Rendevous are all good bbq places. Get a pulled pork sammich Memphis style. |

Every time I would go to Southaven for a concert, we would eat at the "Boiling Point Seafood and Oyster Restaurant". It was good and less likely to get shot than being in Memphis. We would take the long way just to avoid Memphis. Avoid Memphis at night.

In Southaven? Try Maria's Cantina, Memphis BBQ Co., Huey's. Drive down I-55 to the Como Steakhouse. Windy City Grill for Chicago style deep dish pie. Tribecca Allie for wood fired pizza.
Memphis, Beale St? Rendezvous is OK. I'd choose Rum Boogie or Blues City Cafe. Memphis, BBQ? Central BBQ or Germantown Commissary. Memphis, random? Try The Beauty Shop in Mid-Town - Former beauty shop to Pricilla. Try Coletta's - BBQ Pizza the way Elvis liked it. I wouldn't stop there at night. |

For bar food type stuff and beer Flying Saucer has very big selection of beer, and not bad food. Boscos has n midtown has pretty decent brick oven pizza and they brew their own beer, and you can look into brew ro through glass walls. Be forewarned no firearms allowed there.
Don’t know if you posted in TN hometown, but there is quite a few from in and around the Memphis area. I’m to the east close to Jackson and I try to avoid Memphis as much as possible. There is a nice international grocery on germantown parkway. |

Area native here, and work and live in the area. Central BBQ by the Lorraine Motel (National Civil Rights Museum) is undoubtedly the best and most consistent Memphis BBQ. Have been eating at Central since there was only one (on Central Ave not far from the old fairgrounds and "Liberty Bowl" stadium - the original is being rebuilt right now).
In Southaven, there is a local-only chain named Abbeys that is fast plate lunches right by Lowe's. Nothing earth-shattering but they have good food, it's fast, and they have lightly breaded deep-fried broccoli that is the bomb. Maciel's downtown is pretty much an awesome taco truck turned restaurant. It is great Mexican food made by people from Mexico. The owner is almost always there and he is super friendly. They make their own chips, not something bought from Sysco. |

What about Graceland? Do you have to enter where the shit holes live to get to Graceland or is Graceland OK? My wife wants to go to Graceland, but based on what I have read here and in other places, I told her to put that idea on pause.

If you end up in collierville, try Ciao Baby pizza or soul fish for a more conventional lunch menu.
