The red shirts in Star Trek die all of the time.

It's a given that if a dude with a red shirt gets beamed down he's a gonner.

Well...

Scotty was a red shirt, and he was beamed down (Relics episode).  What gives?

Factoid:  the words "beam me up Scotty" were never said on the show.

Of all the red shirted crewmen shown, only 10% were killed.   I have no idea what the percentage of crewmen who "beamed down" is.  Probably a lot higher.

But Scotty was a certified badass.

Scotty was a red shirt engineer officer not a red shirt sacrificial security officer.

The Nomad probe killed him. Then 'repaired' him, but he was dead.

Did the different shirt colors ever actually signify anything? Or was laundry day a clusterfuck?

He was killed in the Episode "I Mudd". They killed him with happiness. But then he was happier that he was dead. Let's hear it for our dear friend! HA HA HA HA HA!

Because he wasn't actually a "red shirt". He just wore a red shirt.
