I forget if it's in the book "Tolkien and the Great War" or not, but he said "we were all orcs" discussing those who were in the trenches. It was a condition of being, of industrialized warfare. And LOTR was both not WW1 or WW2 and as a myth, doea still contain elements of both without being a metaphor for them. IIRC LOTR was supposed to be an English/British Isles mythos as so much of their pagan ancestry had been erased by the Saxons and Normans and every other invasion. It was to fill a gap left when the druids departed. Memes.
