I was in Tractor supply for some stuff and they had the dog food I was buying for a few bucks off. I picked up a bag, got out to my truck, and realized I don’t have a dog anymore. She died a few weeks ago. I was happy to save the $5, but the good feeling was gone when I remembered. Recommend a family guard dog that can ride in a truck to work with me. We had a yellow lab. Should I get another lab? That’s what my wife wants. She doesn’t like not having a dog at the house. Should I hold out for the Doberman Pinscher I’ve always wanted? She’s fighting me a little on it. Any dog under 50 lbs is a cat, and cats are pointless. I’m more likely to pick up from breeder after vetting, than finding a rescue dog. Sounds like you don't have many years ahead of you anyway. I'd hold out for the doberman

Sorry about your Pup.
But, how can anyone forget their dog died? |

We have a 5 month old Doberman. Her mentality and behavior is so much different than our other dogs. She thinks, about everything. You can see her make a decision and go with it. It is really amazing how breeding works. She also loves to blow bubbles in her water dish with her snout and makes a huge mess doing it. View Quote |

Quoted: Interesting. How did you come about getting her? View Quote But we wanted a guard dog and Boston Terriers just won't cut it. She is a sweet dog and only 2/3 grown. I am amazed at how many people are intimidated by her despite her being a puppy and wagging her nub. It's almost humorous as she is obviously a puppy and not aggressive when out and about. But what a mouth full of serious looking teeth. We have her in some basic obedience classes at Petsmart. They really aren't bad but we just wanted socialization. We can barely participate in the exercises because she knows what to do within seconds and then just does it not waiting on us. But despite my doubts the classes are pretty decent considering they are very rudimentary. |

I always used to hit up the Costco pet section every trip.
It was a neat little detour, and found some decent deals occasionally. Took me several months to stop wandering that way after avatar passed away. |

McNab
Smart as hell, very trainable, loyal, loves to fetch, natural working drive, good size ~50 lbs, and bark is big for size too. good for making would be criminals shit themselves Recently empty of fur babies my self McNab is at/near top of the list when its time for a new pup wikipedia |

I always had Black Labs.
Three (mother and two of her pups) and second wife was scared of them. Sold off the two pups and then bought a Wheaten Cairn Terrier before mother dog died. While only 15 pounds she is smart and clever. Very 'low maintenance.' She will get your attention when she needs to go out, and has never peed in any of the three houses she has lived in. Or in any other interior place either. Only dumped one time 2 weeks after we had got her. Cairns are designed to make you brush them. The fur will mat if not brushed every few days. I joke she starts to look 'Rasty' (as in Rastafarian). She gets doggy 'dreadlocks.' So you brush them and there is very little shedding since they are brushed do often. |

Sorry for your loss, I know how you feel. We lost our Golden 3 months ago and I still look for her at the back door when I get home from work. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Get a soggy acres lab.
I lost mine 2 weeks ago, and plan on getting a new one when the time best fits (we have twins due in January and not sure I want puppy duty on top of that) My wife used to complain about the hair, but I was looking at other breeds and she basically directed me back to labs now that she is gone, just not yellow this time so the hair blends more with our floor |

They're good with family, good with friends, awesome guard dogs and very loyal and protective. How could you even consider a lab over a doberman? A lab is like a dumb ol' slobber machine by comparison. You just need to pull the trigger on a dobie puppy and bring it home to your wife. =) She'll be happy for the pup. |

Love our Beagle / Coonhound to death, but she's a bit under your fighting weight, at 44 lbs. Sweetest damn dog in the world.

I hate the bark of bloodhounds. They don't sound good at all.

Catahoula Leopard Dog . Find a rescue group and they can hook you up.

I can't recommend a Ridgeback enough... super loyal, loving and big goofy babies. They'll also protect you and yours. Our girl was the best dig ever.

So do we but it wasn't an option from the breeder. They haven't been too bad to deal with but we wouldn't recommend it. Though as far as looks go there is no denying the aggressive appearance of posted ears. View Quote Since then the floppy ears has grown on me. |

It does look much more aggressive, if I was going to crop mine it would have been the military crop, but I didn't want to put them through that. its tough keeping a doberman puppy calm, never mind 2 of them and they were getting the Gastropexy and spay so I really didn't want to put them through more then they had too. Since then the floppy ears has grown on me. View Quote I’m a fan of the cropped look. The same way I’m a fan of the GSD pointed ears. |

Rottweiler or Doberman. If you train them right and socialize them they will be some of the best dogs you have ever owned.
I have both and they are great loving dogs. Good guard dogs and are nice to outsiders when I tell them it’s ok. |

Sorry about your Pup. But, how can anyone forget their dog died? View Quote My wife saw the bag in the back of the truck. Asked if I forgot while crying. That made me really not very happy. I’m not sure if getting another dog right away is the right thing to do, or letting the family greave for a while before reintroducing a dog. |
|
So I had the “can I get a Doberman” conversation with the wife. She’s afraid that when people come over, they will be scared of the dog, and it will have to be put up before we use the yard.
What’s the consensus? Are you scared to be around a family dog that is scary looking? |
|
Family Dobies are usually big loveable dorks in all my experiences.

If you want a protection breed and a family dog Dobermans are great dogs. They are very smart too. The only possible negatives is they are high energy dogs that require a lot of exercise and they are not long lived. They don't like cold weather. Rottweilers are similar though they don't require as much exercise. They are larger and also are short lived, as most large breeds are. Both are naturally protective of their family and bond strongly to their owners.

German Shepherd is what you seek.
Good family dogs and they will buttfuck an intruder. |
|
You don’t want a Doberman. There are too many genetic problems with them due to some selective breading in the past.
