Something I heard last night and just looked it up... US Army Medical Corps.
From 1980 to 1994, Birx served as an active duty reserve officer in the United States Army. From 1994 to 2008, Birx was active duty regular Army, achieving the rank of Colonel.

A quick search shows that doctors start as an O4 or O5 and possibly higher depending on their experience.

Knudsen. He worked at Ford and then GM prior to WWII; in 1940, FDR asked him to come be Chairman of the Office of Production Management, then in January 1942 FDR commissioned him as a Lieutenant General  to be Director of Production, Office of the Undersecretary of War. He resigned in 1945 and went back to civilian life.

I mean, hey Doc come work for .gov/.mil and make 1/2 of what you might on the outside with the same skillset. Couple that I knew did it mostly because Uncle Sam was willing to pay off student debt for a certain amount of service. |

Navy can direct commission medical up to Captain. They’ll come in for a few years and get some giant bonus. Pretty weird seeing a captain walk around base with just a national defense ribbon.
