I would always feel as if I was taking advantage of her, even if my feelings were genuine.

When I was a little kid, my aunt and uncle took in lots of Downs Syndrome kids as foster parents. At first they frightened me because they looked different. But after spending some time around them (I was only 6-8 years old) I found they were very loving kids and not at all frightening...just different.

Anyhow, I would be inclined to be protective of her, but to look upon her more as someone I am supposed to protect from anyone who would be predatory, mean, or otherwise abuse her. I would keep romantic feelings away from the relationship, but would be very protective.

But I have lots of the sheepdog type feelings toward all people, animals, and others. Sheepdog feelings are protective, guarding, helpful and care greatly for all the sheepdog is to watch over. The sheepdog doesn't eat those it is to protect, and is always watchful over them.

You are on the right path by realizing you have feelings for her, you just need to guard those feelings to protect yourself as much as to protect her. If she was your sister or daughter, how protective would you be, and how would you feel if you knew some fellow was showing interest in her?
