Short back story first: Five months ago a customer stole $1100 out of my wallet that I left on top of my desk. (small shop so no private office). My wife always told me to NOT leave my wallet there but I know every customer and always felt safe doing it. It had to be one of two different customers as they were the only people in the shop that day. Fast forward to 15 minutes ago.
I own a small auto shop and I'm currently a one man band. One of the above mentioned customers came in for a tire repair. I took his keys and went outside to move a car and then bring his into the shop. As I'm walking out the door something didn't sit right with me having him in the shop by himself. I quickly took a look in the bay door window and I see him in the top drawer of my desk looking at something. His back was to the door and me so he'd have to turn around to see me looking at him. I stormed in the shop to confront him he quickly dropped whatever was in his hand (I think my checkbook) and grabbed a pen and closed my drawer. I threw his keys at him and told him to get out. We exchanged words and I told him that I don't believe anything he's trying to tell me. He only lives a block away and now I fear for the safety of my customers cars. My son and I are in a trap tournament tonight so I can't stay half the night to keep an eye on the place. What's my best move GD? |

Get security cameras. Good ones.
Or pay off another junkie to take care of business. |
|
One possible solution: Don't sweat it. You have fencing, lights, alarms, and cameras everywhere. Go do your thing. Call the police if you get any alerts.
|
|
Invest $500-$1000 in a quality 4k security camera system with NVR and remote viewing/notifications.
|
|
For tonight, call your po-po non emergency line, explain that you caught a now ex-customer trying to steal from you today, the guy got heated, and you would appreciate a drive by or two until he cools off.
Then invest in cameras, et al. |

View Quote If you dont have the aforementioned cameras and fencing and lighting, you could prioritize your business and customers and ditch the tournament, if you dont have ways of catching the guy or proving it was his fault damage or theft occured while you were gone. I wouldnt prioritize recreation over my business reputation or customer property |

I can't believe you don't already have cameras. I'm one of the poors and I have them around my house.

I'm not driving to NJ to handle something you should be able to do yourself, but I'd fuck the guy up for you for $1000...in Minecraft
|

You left $1100 laying around in an unsecured wallet?
Wow. I'm scared to walk around with that much money in my wallet in my pocket. |
|
You should have beat him with a breaker bar. Hopefully another opportunity presents itself.

Cameras.....for a couple hundred bucks the original theif would have been arrested with a possible Felony(unlikley after a plea)....but still protect's your investment.

You have insurance to cover customer's property that's in your care and possession right?

I'm 6'2", 215 lbs and he's 5'5" maybe 125 lbs. This might be a good option |

Did he make some threats or respond in a way that makes you think he’s going to come back and damage things? Or are you simply assuming that since he seems to be a thief, he must also be a vindictive vandal and/or arsonist, who is now bent on ruining your business?
Unless you’re leaving things out, I highly doubt he’ll want to be seen anywhere near your shop. I’m willing to bet you’ve had customers way more likely to come back and damage things because they were pissed about a repair bill or a repair not done to their satisfaction, than that guy. Unless the guy is way out there and off balance, you likely have nothing to worry about. |

No, he didn't make any threats but he's a young(ish) punk. I don't know what he's capable of doing. Many of you mentioned cameras - I REALLY need to get some. I'm on a main road mixed with residential house on all of the side streets. There is a lot of foot traffic so I think that deters people from fucking with businesses in the area. None of us ever had a problem that I know of and I've been here 25 years. |

Sorry Op, dont mean to be the bearer of bad news, but you are in reactionary mode. Not good.
He's a thief of indeterminate tier level. He's probably already scoped you out. The whole "tire repair" thing may have a ruse to size you up. Its odd someone would just start rummaging thru your office desk, less he knows the way you do biz and knew your routine of going outside and leaving your desk/office unattended... Did he make any threats? You're probably going to want to write everything down while its fresh, his vehicle details, his description, etc in the event he decides not to lets words be words. Next, you need to change things up if he's tracking on ya. Hours your there, lights, locks, visible & less visible cams, etc. but most especially, who you allow in your office and when its closed & locked. Get a shop dog, maybe two. |

First of all, you need to lock your shit up. Any desk should have a locking drawer.
|
|
Guess you’ll be doing what the wife said. I would say leaving a wallet out is careless..checkbook too. Get a small box that can be secured.
Keep a tire iron handy. |
|
|
He’s not gonna do anything. He knows he was caught and is thanking his lucky stars that’s it. He will move on to the next crime that doesn’t involve you.

I don't understand off body carry of wallets, guns, phones, keys, etc.

You're from New Jersey, you should be teaching us about how to handle shit like that.

The things we worry about seldom happen. The ones that do often don’t happen the way we thought they would.
Things like cameras can help but a lot of stuff like Ring indoor cam $60. Each. On Amazon hooks to WiFi and powered by a lug in to 110 or a battery. About $10 a month to store to the cloud. These cameras don’t have very high resolution, but still show what happened w app on your phone. Camera placement is important. I bet someone here could suggest a really high resolution system. But anything is better than nothing cause even the Ring will let you access it from home to look at what’s going on. Don’t keep lots of cash and your check book there. Put pens in a cup on the desk. Get a state or city job so you have retirement someday. City and DOT both hire mechanics. |

Sucks for sure.
Why do you believe this customer will now suddenly escalate his crimes? Just because you caught him? |
|
You don't have cameras and you had the drop on him stealing from you for a second time and the guy is still walking around able-bodied??
"Well officer when I surprised him while he was stealing from me he attacked me but luckily I had this tire iron handy and was able to defend myself." |

You have this on video right OP? You do have a camera recording in the office right? Right?
