I’m getting the itch for an MP5 or clone. Help. (Page 1 of 3)

I have long hated MP5’s, now I kinda want one. I’ve got a lot of experience on a government MP5K but never shot the more common full size model. Do I want the 8.9” barrel model or the “K” model? I’m looking at the MKE (AP5) and the Hk SP5. I really don’t want to spend Hk money unless i genuinely need to. I’m ok with changing the locking piece and extractor. I’ll be keeping the gun in an FRT-friendly state so suitability to accept an FRT is a consideration. That said, encourage me and offer some insight, MP5 experts. |

Full size vs K comes down to how you're going to use it, OP. If you're buying one to shoot on the range because they're fun to shoot, get a full size, a fixed stock and go to town. If you might want to use it as a travel gun/pdw/bag carry, the K is a lot easier to pack down than the full size. |

| If you're debating between the full size and the K-version, and thinking about spending the money on the HK version...I'd do what I did and get the MKE AP5 and the AP5-P(the K version). Both of mine have been flawless. Both are registered SBRs. Both have Rarebreed FRTs. |

MP5s are range toys. You take it to the range, you say "ho ho ho," you slap the charging handle, you put a couple hundred rounds through it while smiling, then you take it home, and you toss it in the back of the safe because you have something better for defense. My AP5 scratches that itch and does that job well. |

If someone created at Scorpion Evo FRT I’d be all over that. You are correct. I don't know about FRT support, but there are modern 9mm PCCs out there with good roller delay/radial delay systems that both improve the shooting experience and improve suppression. Nothing has the cool factor of the MP5, but guns like the CMMG Banshee and Springfield Kuna are a lot more modern and practical. |

| HKs are made by Teutonic craftsmen from the freshest Bayer polymer and Albert & Duvall steel at the headwaters of the Neckar river in Obendorf, Germany. Every SP5 that leaves the factory has exactly .018” bolt gap and is inspected to the same standards as the military MP5s. |

if you have the $$$$ get a real HK, if not MKE makes a fine clone. Dakota tactical makes a nice one also, but they are HK money or more |

That’s kinda my beef—bolting a bunch of shit onto it to make it compatible with the 21st century in a world of CZ, B&T and (ugh), Springfield Kuna’s. Dudes will drag a SCAR in 2026 for not being modular enough but quickly say the MP5 isn’t dated… like wtf? No BHO, no factory welded top rail, having to lock it open to reload, needing Aryan-length thumbs to operate the selector… ANYWAYS. I would like one because I still appreciate 9mm sub guns. I don’t wanna derail this though, I feel how I feel based on carrying a K for work and if you dig it I’m happy for you. Sometimes just enjoying it for what it is makes it worth it. So I do wanna own one, it’s an easily FRT’d gun that sounds good suppressed that friends will enjoy at the range. It might also get some duty as a hurricane gun if we need to evacuate. I also can’t stand guns that don’t run so if I gotta spend HK money I will. If I don’t HAVE to, I’d rather not. |

I’d likely go with RB, I fired an M4 with an RB and holy shit, it was basically an M4A1. I’m a believer. |

I’ve bought 3 of the MKE guns since Century became their importer (and 1 back when ATI was) and I have a genuine HK as well (but it’s an HK MP5-N and not an SP5). You certainly get more for your money with the MKE guns. I bought a full-size first and a K second. You may have to (or want to) change the locking piece on a K when going suppressed and adding a stock, so the full-size is more forgiving in that regard. (That’s true of the HK-made K as well.) Yeah super safety Idk if the SS are letting it fly before they are closed or what but theres a significant noticeable uptick in RPMs with those posted with a MP5K |

That’s exactly the feedback I’m looking for. I’d like 750-850 RPM, reliability, and either folding or collapsing brace so I don’t need to sweat crossing state lines with the pistol. My intention is to have an OEM trigger pack and an FRT trigger pack so I can keep it legal going between Florida and TN. |

My MP5K with a RB and a 80 degree piece suppressed with a 147gr is clocking 800 to 850 says some app I uploaded a video to Basically feels the same as mp5/sd. But I havent directly measured them with the same app Throw back in the 110 piece and Im sure itll uptick But those super safety vids seems to have something else going on. Got to be an advanced timing thing as they are in the 1200+ RPM territory based on vids |

You're supposed to use a different locking key if you shoot it suppressed. Mine doesn't care. I SBR'd it last year and it is now my most fun gun. Attached File |

| Get the full-size MKE, then get the K size MKE, then buy some mags. All that will still be cheaper than just the HK SP5. No regrets on my MKE guns. |

MKE had a license from HK to make the guns, and they have been making them for a long time. The MKE guns even have the correct 2 pin lowers, unlike the HK. The K version fits perfectly in a laptop case. I use it as my vacation gun. I handled an SP5. If they were within $200 of the MKE, I would get the HK. Almost triple the cost is a hard pass. |
