Well, I got better, but dang that was weird.

I opened my eyes and could look around but couldn't move my hand the slightest bit.  I couldn't open or close my mouth I could move my eyeballs around a bit after a while but I couldn't reach my phone or twitch my leg to get Rio (pet parrot) to jump on me and wake me up.

So, I'm thinking this is sleep paralysis.  It wasn't anywhere , just my bedroom but near the end I was laying on a steep part of the fairway on a sunny day at a  golf course (i hate golf), and after about 10 seconds (but seemed hours long), I could finally take a breathe.   I wrote it down and forgot to pot about it here, this happened just on Saturday night, nothing different about conditions and no Ambien, alcohol, or similar taken.

How I "escaped" was a rather separately terrifying in a freaky way itself.   After the bedroom faded and a sunny spring green grass was all around me,  I thought to myself "This must be what it is like to die from a heart attack in your sleep or something.   Then a handful of seconds later, I could finally move and I shot out of bed so fast to check the mirror  Totally freaked me out.

So this whole episode was a terrifying and torturous about 10 minutes, but that' a guess.   It happened late middle of sleep cycle, around hour 6 of 9

So....   Is what sleep paralysis feels like?  There was no tunnel of light and oddly zero sound added, but I suppose only a few percent of dreams have a soundtrack, the ones that are trying to warn/prepare for who knows what.  Kind of like a "Hey, everybody panic, this means you pal. Bye."   Having zero direction but now an added sense of dread, but this didn't seem to have that sort of bend to it.

Probably. It's different for everyone, but the inability to move, speak, etc. while still being fully "conscious" (obviously you're not, but your brain/dream state is active) is basically it.

If it keeps happening to you, you'll get good at it and just start ignoring it/waking yourself up because you'll realize what's happening in your semi-conscious state.

At least you were on a grassy golf course. I like golf.

I get shadow people pawing at me and things that don't exist hurled all over the room by invisible beings. Good times.

While it could be sleep paralysis, I'd suggest getting your BP checked and maybe tested for apnea, a couple things you mentioned point to possible physical symptoms.

That is weird.   I ended up in some sort of the opposite of the typical experiences with paralysis.  First half was dying in my bedroom and the last blip was the Golf Course.   Was that "The Light" I was supposed move to, I c oudln't move there, either?     Paralyzed and tingle like I was sleeping wrong side of my whole body freaked me out - then cut scene to laying on bug free grass right at the edge of shade to sunlight.  No people, no insects, no animals but just a breeze (~5-15 mph in huge gusts, mostly around 5 mph) sort of feel that could be seen zoomed out. it was just like an AI "show me a light breeze shifting through the grass of a golf course with my laying down next to the shadow of a tree on a fairway".

You other people have it bad and have a poltergeist, shadow people, and going like 8 whole hours in a trance with that "worse case" one.      This is a guy that is in 3 timelines *spo8iler* haven't long enough to see if there are more, imdb says 3 anyway*.  Architect, Rock Star, and Hitman.  It's got horrible reviews but for low bud you aren't get John Wick quality brain gunk.

Strangely enough though, Amazon suggested "Flashes" movie on prime today (despite me not posting/emailing) anybody today)/ I like free movies.  The problem I have with it is suggesting very precise queries and offers uncannily exact as to the swaps between "me".  Perhaps they're in the ad rotation and it just caught my eye because it was applicable and I never pay any attention to the ads that made it past my blocerks if they get past the good regex sourcing spam  search.

@seek2

I asked this in the place I go to "ask a nurse" on the online thing.  Submitted it at like 6:01 because I totally forgot about it and the 5pm ding made that painfully clear.  I need to make it a -5 minutes warning.  Last CT scan was 6 years ago and I'm automatically in some free .gov program doing it all the e wrong way.   They put a billboard saying "over 40 pack-yeasra a day?  You might have cancer and not know it, call for an appointment".  Tons of people signed up.   Anyway, they're getting me in for another CT scan since they did a full pulmonary work up after I quiet smoking, from blood to pee to spit  it was manumitting to give all those samples to the smoking hot body samples section (Or I had one of these nurse raver sorts, I didn't notice black make up but came up blank.

Body fluids chick had No visible ink, either, but she did have a bedroom voice and very flirty eyes in a nice smile promoting me to [s] admit I'm guilty of a parking ticket in AR for a speeding ticket 18 years ago[s]   She could have been an interview clock with the "everybody is guilty of something" dress very casual with tight clothing in all the right places going on .   So I asked the  nurse if she enjoyed our conversation.  She said that was my job, so I slid out the smooth, can you make a copy so I can go to your voice" would be total creeper territory.

Oh, and yeah, I got a follow up for an oil change and check of all of there fluids, I feel like I just gave a liter of blood sometimes when they order 5 test tubes of blood.  I guess it's more important than I thought when it asked me questions about changes since last checkup. I'm the ifst available CT schedule so I need to like limit diet and not only pacifier (no flavor, no nic or anything 'active ingredient', strange addiction, I mix the PG and VG myself, nothing, _n0thing_ is added, so strange to me.  No DTs, but feeling tight like I need to move for some reason.   well, other option is try vape and exhale into coat and there no odor bu the demon has me possessed or something..   You don't want to know where it came from or my o ld house. Hopefully that doesn't matter, they're also going to get me fit for a chest band and use phone app for sleep apnea so I hope I'm sleepy, way better chance of succeeding then dying before I get close to 8 decades to be able to yell at the clouds as  well.

I already know I have a CT scan I suppose in April due to  wait list.  I'd think that they'd somehow be able to get enough EMT's hired instead of continually expanding a block at a time, as soon as one is down, the other two increase.    One wrote a a list, another is killing the people on that list, and the  3rd is a former architect (well, started out as one, but "loses it".

I'll try to keep this updated if something that is worth y of news is there I guess.

Mine was combined with raw terror as it felt like something pure evil - like a demon - was hanging on the wall just outside my bedroom. Good times!

I vividly remember that it wasn’t stationary. It moved around outside, and somehow I knew that. When daybreak came it left, and I could feel it receding as it “flew” away.

While it was there the evil it radiated pulsed in intensity. It was always radiating evil, just at times it seemed to be a little less and then it would increase. I’d close my eyes and pray, that was all I could do.

I was quite exhausted the next morning. What was weird was my wife felt like something strange was going on too - she didn’t have full-on sleep paralysis but she felt a presence.

I mean this in the best possible way, but your posts in this thread don’t really look like your normal posting style (the way you write/articulate).

Might want to get checked out to make sure everything’s OK.

Yeah sleep paralysis, I've had it thousands of times. Rather mundane at this point.

I remember the first time it happened when I was a little kid. There was a tiger in my closet. Been some freaky ones where I've had a grudge looking girl climb on top of me. But haven't had any bad ones in a long time. My theory is if you panic you get worse hallucinations. Because your brain realizes you are awake and tries to put you back to sleep, if you are in a panicked state you'll usually drop into a nightmare. Its happened to me so many times now that it's not frightening, I can actually focus on wiggling a finger and as soon as I'm able to I usually wake up.

There's been times when it happens that I've asked people I see in the room to wake me up and they can hear me. That freaks them out more than me lol.

Mine is initiated by sleep apnea usually. I have found out that if I sleep on my side it doesn't happen. It only ever happens when I sleep on my back.

This is largely my experience too. At first, many years ago, it really freaked me out, to the point where a couple times I couldn't sleep anymore that night.

Then I started noticing things. Nothing in the room had moved, to include both me (same position I was in when I fell asleep) and the cats (all on the bed, curled up). I would wake up in a bit of a panic, and usually one of them would wander up to cuddle. I'd like to think they were comforting me, but I'm pretty sure it was "Oh, good. You're awake. Pet me."

With nothing amiss, no animals paying any attention whatsoever (and I had one who was a helluva guard cat, would hiss at people and vehicles coming up the driveway), eventually I realized  it was just in my ADHD/OCD skull coupled with the sleep paralysis, and I started being able to wake myself up when it happened. I'd get annoyed, because I lost some rest, roll over and go back to sleep.

One of them recently freaked me out a little bit again though. By "recently," it was over a year ago now. Got stuck at work at my substation overnight for a midnight outage (where we actually have to turn people's power off to fix something, and so we do it at night). I have a cot set up in the basement for just such nights. Cabela's model, thick foam on it, a couple blankets I brought from home. Decent to grab a few hours rest while waiting for a crew to finish up so I can switch things back.

Station's old (went online in 1955), but it's just an old .gov cinderblock building. Nothing ever happened there or anything. But, in the spare rooms in the basement, with the door closed, it's "on a tour of a cavern and they stop for a bit to turn out the lights" dark. Pitch black. Only thing in the room is the water heater, an old cabinet of obsolete equipment, an ancient printer on an equally ancient printer stand (not even plugged in), and a phone, which is great, as I can just sleep until it rings.

So I go lay down, and close the door, as there's the usual station noise/lights. Cooling fans on comm equipment, status LED's on everything, etc. I have one of the sleep paralysis episodes.

The dream accompanying it was weird to boot. I "woke up, and sat up," (I did neither, obviously) and the room was brightly lit with construction crap laying all around. Paint cans, bits of lumber, that sort of thing. All of a sudden there's an invisible presence there, pieces start flying all over the room. I start to panic, then realize what's happening. "Oh. Wake up stupid." And I did.

Annoyed, I grab my cell phone and check the time, and just to be sure, shine the flashlight I brought around a little. Nothing. Go back to sleep.

The exact same thing happens again. I mean, same dream, same room, same outcome.

Now I'm really annoyed. I'm tired, and getting cranky, so I roll over one more time, and it happens AGAIN. Except this time, when I wake myself up, and turn on the flashlight, all of a sudden the room is brightly lit, and construction crap starts flying around it. In my dream, I literally said "Holy shit. You didn't wake up." And woke myself up.

This time I got up and went upstairs and just stayed up for the rest of the night. Fuck that Inception Sleep Paralysis Crap.

Reflecting on it, I think it may have been the utter pitch-blackness of the room My bedroom at home is upstairs, there's a sliding door out to the deck, and the blinds are rarely closed. Even when they are, there's still light. Moonlight, the occasional car passing on the highway below, a green LED on the smoke detector and another on the power strip, some light filtering in from downstairs at the door. When I wake up, even just a little bit, there's always a frame of visual reference to ground my mind. I didn't have that in the basement. Just a theory.

I might not do real well in sensory deprivation tanks.

Anyway brass, please keep us apprised of the test outcomes. Hopefully it's nothing but brain tricks. The numbness and difficulty breathing you mention are a bit concerning, but those can be sleep apnea too, and as FoxValleyTacDriver mentioned, that triggers his, and probably has something to do with mine as well.

Thanks for the input.  I'm waiting on the the Sleep Center clinic section of hospital to contact me about the sleep study, it just uses the app on the phone and a finger  thingy and chest band that both connect to phone and the app and that's it.    Why has every little thing become a specialist with it's own clinic and the hospital sane always building more buildings for more clinic splintering off.   I remember when you paid at time of visit and your general practice doctor did everything from headaches to heart surgery, but life span is a lot better these days.   I do need a new heart valve if I live that long, i had a full cardiac work up 5 years ago and there's a regurgitation on one side but was ok otherwise for the last time I had a heart attack scare but turned out to be a panic attack but they did that to be sure.

Suggestions to sleep on my side and I'll try that now.  I've already had like a 4 hour nap but I'll try actually going to bed instead of nodding off because I'm rather physically stressed from work that went long.

Kind of worried as I've hit other symptoms like seeing stars sometimes when moving from horizontal to vertical quickly, I've let my self go and am back to 220 lb from 170 where I was at 4 years ago so need to lay off on candy.   No alcohol use, but kratom is a wonderful thing to try and has helped me out greatly to chill out.  Red Bali Red Borneo I'd suggest if you want to try it.   Fully legal, similar to CBD to a non-paranoid THC sort of thing, get the powder and start at 2 g (takes a couple weeks to get exact amount nailed down), use a scale because density changes a lot and changing from 1.5 to 4 g with a teaspoon messes people up and they hate it.  It's not a super buzz sort of thing but it does just take the edge off.  If expecting an opioid full experience it's not that but sort of similar, better pain relief and relaxation than something in the sort of middle ground like Tramadol as an example.

You just described the sleep paralysis I had for about the first half of my childhood. Terrifying, isn't it?

I grew out of it about 11-12 years old and haven't had the breathing thing again, but I still get sleep paralysis occasionally even at 44 years old, it's just pretty simple where I can't move. I usually implement a breathing exercise where I start taking huge breaths in and out, and if I can keep that going for ~30 seconds it will knock me out of the sleep paralysis most of the time.

I wouldn't wish it or chronic anxiety attacks on anybody.  I'd take physical pain over continually random mental anguish, however, when I have a broken knee, I take that back.

I had that when I was young, and strange beings would mess with me. Then one night I had had enough and snapped out of my paralysis and beat the ever loving fuck out of it, (actually, I am pretty sure I killed it), and I never had problems after that.

That was my exact experience as well.

I've had one episode of major sleep paralysis, which scared the shit out of me, and several relatively minor ones.

The big one happened when I was a young adult and was taking a nap during the day.  I became aware of a very loud, continous sound that I can't describe and felt myself being pulled toward it.  I couldn't move a muscle.  I couldn't even open my eyes.  This probably lasted a few seconds but it seemed like forever and then I snapped out of it and woke up.  There was some kind of machinery running in the yard next to ours, which was probably the source of the noise I heard.

I’ve only had the two. About 17 years ago now.

First was in a high rise city hotel in Montreal.  I was completely paralyzed and could only move my eyes.
I had that evil shadow entity next to the bed, I only saw it because of the window light. It lasted a minute and when I broke free it was over.

Second was in my bedroom at home a few months later. Paralized.  Red and white lights flashing rapidly outside my window. Loud dental drill sound mixed with a train horn.  I got a leg free and off the bed and it was over.

Isn't that simultaneously the weirdest and best feeling in the world?

I can remember/picture something similar...not your experience, but the experience of "fuck this shit. I'm going to move, even if it's just a part of me."

I've done a lot of cool/fun stuff while conscious. Doing/Being/Existing while unconscious, or semi-conscious, and directing your own reality in such a state is...amazing.

What came as a shock many years later was when I saw a picture of an alien mantis type. These were the pricks that had been pestering me when I was a child in the early 1950's.

I won't say much due to the public nature of this forum, but reading these two responses was pretty eerie for me, to the point I'm wondering if this is an archetype.

It was amazing.  I felt like Uma in Kill Bill, “wiggle your big toe”.  It worked.  Never had sleep paralysis since.

I rarely ever remember dreams.  It’s like I don’t have them 99.9% of the time.

I only seem to remember the coitus interruptus ones.

Those are the 0.1%.  Wish it was like 50%

I'll try that if it ever happens again.   I'd love to kick it's ass but when I can't breathe or even move eyes very far or wiggle a finger, terror wants to take over but I keep focusing on trying to breathe and if there's no response, I try something else and eventually after a half hour (more close to 2 minutes likely) I can suddenly breathe and it's such a relief but not worth the suck before it.

I'll try to remember the move big toe.  2 Weeks for the sleep study on me ofr a couple nights, I just pick up their kid that goes through phone to their app and logs O₂ and breathing.

How loud are the latest Generation CPAP machine?   I might need one until I un-fat myself.  Not sure how I gained back 40 lb after losing 80 in 2012.   That's the biggest predictor of a heart attack as well - weight yo-yo or moving up/down by over 10 lbs every couple years.

I keep eating ok and am down to 185/190 at 6' and then forget about it and have a snack since I'm in shape and drift back up.  It  is harder and harder to lose the weight all the time.  Stupid Discipline train stopped by and I thought it was for kissing men and I skipped it.  So much of life would be different if I didn't kill my hearing.

Hahaha! I'm the exact same way. Once a month, MAYBE, I'll wake up from a dream and actually remember it for a few hours. Only the really odd ones, i.e. the sleep paralysis ones, leave any memory at all, and it's usually fuzzy.

It's why the three in the basement of the substation stuck out so much. I still remember parts of them, and the ending of each one. That's really unusual for me.

I can only think of one (good) dream I had that I still remember. The details aren't important, but my life was in serious flux at the time (moving to a new city, no job, alone, etc.), and the dream was a real comfort. It was basically "Hey, you got this. Just go do it." And I did. That was right at 30 years ago now, and I still remember large parts of it. That's so far out of the ordinary for me it's literally a one-off experience, at least so far in my life.

It was a good dream.

It wouldn't hurt to get checked out medically just to make sure all is well.  That said, sleep paralysis very definitely can cause very vivid hallucinations and because your brain is awake and your body is running on autonomous breathing you get the impression that you aren't breathing because you cannot take a voluntary breath in that mode.

I've had it on occasion myself.  However, in 1989 I had a very bad series of sleep paralysis episodes.  The hallucinations consisted of either a leathery demon on my chest choking me or a "rubber sheet" type thing slammed over me and vacuum sealed.   It freaked me out badly and I ended up sleeping with a Bible under my pillow.  Interestingly enough, doing that coincided with the end of the sleep paralysis episodes at that time.
