My mom lived in this little house for 30+  years, and the boards were new when she moved in.  Then the little tree rats suddenly start gnawing on it out of the blue about a year after she passed and I had moved in to the place.  I've tried a spray from the store that was supposed to deter all sorts of critters and it didn't seem to do jack.  I tried one I found online that had you mix hot sauce and other home ingredients, but it also didn't seem to do much.

Any good tips or tricks out there?

Choot em.

I have an agreement with tree rats, stay away from the house and garden and I won't kill you. They break the truce occasionally and balance gets restored.

Spray them with a good pellet gun.
I declared war about 2 years ago when squirrels were chewing on my house. And then a buddy who does home inspections pointed out damn near every house has signs of those tree rats chewing on them. I’ve killed probably 200+ and they just keep coming. But I haven’t seen any signs of new chewing in a year or so.

Here in NC you can legally shoot them out of season if your house is being damaged. Have to get a permit from a licensed wildlife control guy to be legal. Or just SSS. All my neighbors subscribe to the SSS plan, so no permits needed here.

Had the same problem, tree rat was eating the solid color stain I used to protect the front porch.

I tried everything too.

Finally I declared jihad on them and gave them lead poisoning

No more chewing the front porch problem

I must be psychic, because as I clicked on it I thought "knowing these guys on here, it's probably a gatling gun."   And I wasn't disappointed.

I have shot a few with my Benjamin Mark II single shot pellet pistol, and am about to get the S&W .22 AR pistol out with the Ruger suppressor.  I work from home and can hear them when they gnaw on the steps, which seem to be their favorite spot, and they are stupid enough to run toward the front yard instead of back between the house and detached garage where they'd have a better escape, so I've been able to hit a couple of them.  They get on the tree and freeze like they can't be seen, but they are in clear view.

Any that I do kill would be good food for the foxes that come out from just across the road about 50 yards from my house.

I suspect they are like beaver and have to, because their teeth keep growing.

OP, I use a motion sensing sprinkler to keep critters out of our hostas. Might work for you as well.

I have used hot sauce with limited success.   You have to apply it all the time.   Easier just to shoot them if they are damaging stuff.  They chew up my platform feeder that I feed them from but that is because I keep a salt wheel on it for them.

.22 Colibri ammo. Dirty as shit second shot in my bolt action is off. I clean between shots. Hits harder than my pellet gun. First shot is accurate like a regular .22
Has no powder its like a double primer charge or something to that effect.

I've used live traps on them with success. Sunflower seeds were real effective.
But when I put in the new garage I had the trees cut down to make room for it and that really keeps them away.

I've had some success with mixing some cheap tobacco with cayenne pepper and water. Steep the tobacco in the water for 24 hours & then strain it. Mix it with the strongest cayenne pepper you can find and spray it on with a tank sprayer. You want a course stream not a fine spray. You'll have to keep shaking the tank because the pepper will want to settle out. Wear goggles or you'll be very sorry.

Think I killed about fifty last year. I use an old family shotgun. Its a 1925 Winchester Model 1897 with a 30" barrel and full choke. Takes them down hard.
