| Highwayradar app with a Bluetooth/ wifi uniden model is the best setup. It's saved me from many speed traps. It integrates crowd sourced data, Waze, weather alerts, Google and airplane alerts with the radar detector. It has heat maps that alert you to where cops have been spotted frequently. It has alerted me to crashes up ahead. It works on Android or iPhone. |

I think location lockouts are determined by frequency and location. So if you have a Ka 34.7 show up in an area that normally automutes a K band, the Ka will alert. I’d have to go back and review the info to know for sure though. |

Problem #3 is overreaction by FDOT or .gov Some guy goes over 100 MPH on A1A and causes big wreck. OMG they are going 100 MPH. Let's drop the speed limit from 45 to 30. And in this spot where it is 30 drop it to 25 MPH. That should fix it. Someone is speeding on bridge and overturned in wreck. It would be one thing if you got a speeding ticket and could pay the fine and that would be the end of it, but at least in some places your insurance company will punish you by raising your insurance rates for FIVE YEARS. So, drivers want to know when they are under surveillance, be it by radar or laser. Most of the drivers I have seen on the interstate (maybe 75%) seem to travel at speeds above the speed limit. There are very few accidents, so those speeds are demonstrably not unsafe. I understand that police are simply enforcing the laws on the books and have no issue with that, but politicians setting artificially low speed limits are a problem that results in people who travel at a reasonable and safe speed being punished. |

And I thought that wasn't too bad. ![]() I went about 16 years before I got another speeding ticket. Knock on wood but it's been about 16 years since I got a ticket - because usually I am "only" speeding a few over which I incorrectly assumed was within tolerable limits. So, my driving example was not follow the exact speed limit. Though I failed at setting the best driving example, both our boys (21 & 22) drive a manual transmission (as do my wife and me) so I did something right. Yea, he paid the ticket, did the class and has had a reset on adhering to the speed limit more closely. I used the incident to buy a new toy. |

He said he clocked me at 88 MPH. I started laughing, stating that I'm not certain this POS can do 88. He said, well honestly, I wasn't really paying attention and traffic was heavy so no ticket. Still, getting pulled over while doing the speed limit shows that theory isn't infallible. My mom was driving on base in a heavy rain, doing well under the speed limit because of the conditions. When I was much younger, it seemed I had more places to be and less time to get there. Got a lot of tickets early. I had an off brand of a Passport IIRC ordered out of a magazine that sold audio gear. Got one of their EQs too. Anyhow, it was a GREAT unit. Served me well for many years until it was stolen from the truck. I got another one (mail order company was out of biz by then) but it was nothing more than an ornament. Pure garbage. Got a couple of tickets with it and I think just having it did make the police a little angry. I gave up on detectors over 20 years ago and just started driving smarter. No more than 10 over depending on where I am. |

My V-1 did the job yesterday that a unit with a GPS lockout could not do. I was on my way to buy groceries. This takes me past a school that has a 20 MPH zone when the yellow lights on poles are flashing. The same pole also has a radar gizmo and one of those signs that tells you how fast you are going. Well, the yellow lights were flashing, and my V-1 alerted as usual, but the bogey counter showed TWO signals instead of the normal single signal. Of course if it had a GPS lockout, it would have been silent. On the grass just off the edge of the pavement right near the radar sign sat Office Obie running traffic radar. I had already slowed down, but just after I passed him, his lights came on (bright enough in my mirror to draw my eye) and he banged a u-turn to pull someone over. Now, I've driven past that school countless times in the years I've lived here, and this is the first time I've seen a cop "hiding" in the cover of that other radar. Glad to have been alerted. |
