punitive psychiatry
6:25 PM - 22 Jun 2018
STEALTH JEFF
@drawandstrike

Let me explain what 'punitive psychiatry' is. It's when someone from a distance psychoanalyzes someone and pretends they are doing something other than airing their most subjective prejudices against that person.

In the psychiatric profession, it's considered malpractice to publicly diagnose someone or pretend to be an expert on their thoughts or state of mind without ever having personally examined the subject.

At most, you can make *generalizations* about someone's state of mind or beliefs or philosophy based on a patter of behavior they have publicly engaged in, statements they publicly made, public actions and decisions, and so on.

For instance, when I said after having watched Obama run for President & actually having been President for 4 years, that he viewed himself as the first 'post-American President' who's job was to manage the inevitable decline of US prosperity, power & influence worldwide?

I was stating a *generalization* based on 6 years of observations of the man's public pronouncements and decisions.

I had never personally met him or asked him a series of diagnostic questions or examined him in any way.

As long as you stick to generalizations based on public statements & actions of the person you are discussing, you are on firm ground as a journalist, a pundit or a political commentator.

If you have no personal contact or 'behind the scenes' accounts to go by.

People in the news media used to understand this distinction I am discussing here, and they followed it. Despite the fact DNC Media was full of biased partisans, they understood where the boundaries were.

It was understood there were lines that you didn't cross.

At the end of the excellent film "The Rainmaker" we hear a voiceover from Rudy Baylor as he watches Deck leave the office for the last time.

It's a great movie about lawyers, but what he says applies to journalists and political pundits as well.

"Every lawyer, at least once in every case, feels himself crossing a line that he doesn't really mean to cross... it just happens.
And if you cross it enough times it disappears forever.
And then you're nothin' but another lawyer joke. Just another shark in the dirty water."

One of the biggest lines in journalism that you never cross is asking the subject of any story you are working on for a comment and feedback before you publish.
DNC Media has now tossed that one out the window.

It's becoming standard practice to NOT contact subjects of stories

There are myriad examples recently of 'news stories' or 'news analysis' or 'think pieces' where the journalist/pundit/commentator didn't make any effort whatsoever to verify/fact check/ask for comment from the person they were about to publicly smear/psychoanalyze, etc.

I'll just pick 3.

1) Crying child on the cover of Time
2) Fake WaPo story that zero tolerance at the border had ended
3) @juliaioffe's 'profile' of Don Jr. in GQ
2 replies 50 retweets 112 likes

1) Crying child picture was sold to the public as a girl snatched from her mother.  It's now known - because somebody got around to checking! - that she was never separated from her mother.

2) Somebody anonymous told the Washington Post that the zero tolerance position had been abandoned. The reporters ran with the story without making any effort to reach out to the DHS to verify if this was actually the case.

Oops!

3) And now we come to THIS profile of Donald Trump Jr. that appeared 2 days ago on the GQ website.

Without ever having contacted Don Trump Jr. or asking for any feedback from him, after talking to a bunch of people who wouldn't go on the record, this reporter decides to weave a story in which she psychoanalyzes someone she didn't even talk to.

Having observed the media since the mid 1980's, this is nothing more than vicious subjective prejudice against someone tricked out as an 'informative news profile', a think piece examining the inner life of a person the reporter doesn't know & may never have even talked with.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the anonymous sources Ioffe supposedly quoted here go public to correct the record, which I've seen happen a few times over the years when smears like this are attempted.

Reporters twisting stuff they were told in confidence anonymously happens all the time since MOST anonymous sources want to stay anonymous, so they don't want to publicly identify themselves and attempt to correct the record.

Suffice to say if Ioffe had shown most of these anonymous sources her finished article before she published it, many of them would've been horrified to see what she'd done with their contributions.

Don Jr's friends and acquaintances don't view him as a sad and pathetic figure, including the ones who's quotes are twisted in this story to sell the narrative that Ioffe wanted to tell, which she had firmly in her mind even before she interviewed them.

Punitive psychiatry weaved around anonymous quotes from people who had no idea where the journalist was going with this article is not 'news analysis' and it's not a fair or objective profile of a public person.

Every single person who's been giving Ioffe 'attagirls!' and accolades for engaging in this kind of 'journalism' needs to remember where the lines are.

Maybe the line disappeared forever for some people.

But the lines are still there, even if you no longer see them.

Well said sir.  How sad is it that professional journalists have turned their backs on ethics that even children's cartoons grasp.  I'm referring of course to Mr. Birkenbake from Fairly Odd Parents who said "Boys, if you wanna destroy somebody's reputation, you have to be fair and get their side of the story too. And you have to do it by tomorrow, or you're off the paper".  Would somebody point out to the MSM that their ethical standards have sunk lower than those of Chester, AJ and a smoof-loving hippie elementary school newspaper editor?

How about a picture of Birkenbake saying; "Do you have any proof? Did you, like, talk to Don Jr.?"

Question/request:

I am pretty sure I saw it in this thread, but now cannot locate it here, or via image search elsewhere---someone posted a pic showing two different photos from the G7 summit, one the famous "staring down" pic, the other taken either right before or right after with everyone, Merkel included, smiling and looking friendly.  If anyone knows where I can find that, it would be much appreciated.

And so as not to freeload:
