Sure, why not?  Escape velocity from the moon isn't much.  And, once it gets started down Earths' gravity well, it'll just accelerate from there.

It's not about escape velocity from the moon - it's about dropping your periapsis enough to impact the Earth, as well. Otherwise, you're just in an orbit that's very similar to that of the moon. You may not have noticed, but the moon has not yet impacted the Earth :)

If you can manage to get fired for fabrication from a lefty news source you must really be a fuck up.  I'd like to know what crosses the line for them to fire someone.

Getting caught while the subject of your fabrication is still hot in the news cycle.

With current deployed tech? No.

With tech that is in prototype stage such as the Navy rail gun (assuming continuous expansion and evolution of tech)? Yes.

That said, Space/moon proofing the Rail Gun, getting the rail gun up to the moon, boosting the tungsten (or mining and refining it on site, which means boosting all that equipment) and getting a power source on site (in and of itself a HUGE task) would mean it's less costly (dollars and cents wise) for a nation to launch a nuclear first strike.

In theory, yes. And it would have a devastating effect if launched with an appropriately powerful mass accelerator/rail gun.

The trouble is, the rod would lose a chunk of its mass breaking through the atmosphere, and it wouldn't be all that accurate, simply due to the distance it's travelling, the turbulence from burning up in atmosphere, the earth's rotation, and the moon's rotation and orbit. You couldn't use a dumb fire weapon, it would have to have some sort of guidance system; a very, very precise one.

Aside from being infeasible due to the moon's rotation, it would be ridiculously expensive. Prohibitively so.

If weather is a problem, you just need to get it moving faster. Instead of trying for a direct shot, maybe make a low orbit around Earth then on the second pass use the Moon's gravity to slingshot the "package" back at the Earth.

How much of the moons rotation matters when its in synchronous rotation?
