Was curious what everyone thinks of this round. I like what it offers but with Glock 20/10mm taking over in the woods carry role and .38/.357 dominating self defense revolvers I'm not seeing long term viability here.

Is it soon to be a niche handgun hunting round for people that don't want .460 or .500 for whatever reason?

Anecdotal evidence, but I went to Alaska this past summer, and all I had was a 10mm. Carried 220grain underwood in it. Wasn't completely confident it was enough at first, but figured it was better than nothing.

After spending some time hiking around, and quiet thought in the vast wilderness... I came to the conclusion that mayyybe a 44 mag wasn't a bad idea like all the locals recommended.

I own a 44 mag now, and carry 320Gr Cast loads.

ETA: Also picked up a 16" Rossi 92 in 44 mag shortly after.

Back in the early 70's, about the time Dirty Harry and Magnum Force movies came out, it seemed like every damn OHP trooper rushed out and bought a .44 magnum.

The problem was qualifications. First shots were 10 rings, follow ups took too long or were sky shots.

Pretty soon, DPS called them all back. Our department instructor said the same thing happened with 10mm.

I'm sure a fanboi will be along momentarily with something anecdotal to say I'm wrong

In one of the later Dirty Harry movies (the one with the "Hogan's Alley" competition) Callahan said he shot .44 Special for that exact reason.  Guess the OHP Tackleberrys should have kept watching.

I’d say it isn’t as popular as it once was.
Out of all the shooters I know hardly any shoot one anymore. Many own one but rarely fire it.
Ammo costs and old man wrists are the major reasons.

Ohh. .44, that's pretty snappy

I want a dark in 357.  Looks like it would be fun to run 200+ grain caste boolits in suppressed.
Anyone know if the riflling is lead boolit compatable?

um, the 44 mag will not be going anywhere, and the 10mm will damn sure not be replacing it, nor will the .460 / .500. thats kind of like claiming the 6.5 cm / . 338 will be replacing the .308 or 30-06. the 44 mag, .308, and 30-06 are super popular, they do their jobs well, have reasonable recoil and good performance, brass is easily found, reloading gear is reasonably priced, and you have tons of platforms to choose from.  the 10mm wins in the semi auto catagory, and the 500 wins in raw power, but the 44 mag enjoys the sweet spot in the middle, decent recoil, decent power, loads of guns to choose from, etc.

i will be buying a threaded dark series as soon as they release / i find one. going to be a fun hunting / suppressed rifle .

Revolvers in general obsolete and dying IMO. Still a fun novelty kind of like a musket compared to the modern day rifle.

I've got a couple Smiths in .44, pre-locks all.

But my favorite .44, and honestly the funnest gun I may own, is my Marlin 1894p.  16-1/4" ported barrel, and I shoot it every chance I get.  I fucking straight up love it.

I'm eying Henry's upcoming Big Boy X models.  Threaded barrel, side loading gate, lower cost than the Marlin Dark series, and arguably better made these days than the Marlin.

I have one, looks new with 2 magazines. VERY accurate rifle. I bought it in the early 70s and while shooting it a guy next to me said it was a collectors gun and I should put it away. I did so and it has spent the rest of it's life in a closet

I just wish I could find a Remington 788 in .44 mag for a halfway reasonable price. It's one of the very few rifles I cuss myself for letting go.

I know it may not be as sexy, but Ruger really needs to make an American chambered in .44 mag.

"I'm not a collector." would have been the appropriate response. Stupid how these hoarders that obsess over certain objects never use them as intended.

Agreed.  My guns are tools and are meant to be used.  I try not to let them get beat to hell, but if they get a scratch or something it happens.  Tools wear with use.  I have a collector grade, or what will one day be a collector grade Winchester 1886, and I shoot the shit out of that gun.  I love it.

Ive got one, sweet shooter.

I love the .44 Magnum.

But here in Michigan it did kinda take a hit when the DNR decided that the 450 Bushmaster qualified as a pistol cartridge during deer season. Why hunt with a 44 when you can use a 450....

Nope, not at all.

It may not be as popular as in years past, but, make no mistake, it is still not uncommon. It is still very popular with hunters and big bore handgun enthusiasts, so it will always have a niche following.

IMHO, it is one of the classic American Calibers.

.22, .45, .38/357, .44

IMHO, anything bigger than 44 magnum in a revolver is more of a conversation pice than a serious defensive handgun....

I suppose strictly for hunting with handguns, they have merit, but they are not the equal of a rifle...

If a bear is charging you, how fast can you and fire a 65 caliber Super Magnum Express handgun with an 18 barrel, that weighs 105 ounces empty, from a holster that's seven feet long?

A model 29, with a four inch barrel is something you can actually carry, draw and fire under stress, and it's about the limit for that purpose.

.44 magnum has been around for over 50 years, why would it be going anywhere? And Op is wrong, 10mm isn't taking over as a woods gun with .357 magnum taking "over" as a self defense round. My EDC is 10mm, full power Underwood Ammo 10mm, not, pathetic under powered 10mm that = .40 S&W ballistics. Still, if I was going into the woods, I'd prefer to carry my S&W 657 .41 magnum for a bit more kick than 10mm full power rounds (but less kick than .44 magnum) in case of encountering wild animals in my state. I'd rather have .12 ga. with slugs, if encountering a bear, as most handgun rounds are inadequate.  Op thinks .44 magnum is endangered species. I have .41 magnum and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
