I am acutely aware.

The outcome and the forced admissions in that court case were really something else.

Pretty standard in the era, most internal work was done from underneath, pistons, rods rings, especially flat heads most early engines were designed so you could take pistons and rods out without removing head, also tightening the mains up, and the valve jobs are done without removing head on many early engines
More of the proper way to do it

heck some engines did not even have a detachable head in the first place.

i guess for the era i can understand it but boy would that make me uncomfortable.

They are easy to work with, never have a head gasket problem, with modern casting would work even better on small engines, with the L and T head it’s easy to do the valve jobs through the top caps, doing the valve jobs on overhead cam heads like on Bugattis or Bentleys is tougher as you have to do it through a long cylinder but there are special tools for it, interesting issue on some though is if you push the piston too far up into combustion chamber the rings will pop out and lock the piston up and then you have too break the piston or figure out how to get it back out
